View Full Version : all carbon fiber gear case ?
i would like to build one
first is it possible
second who would have a doner case for the plug
and how much is a gear set these days complete
third i need some one who knows how to assemble a speed master or stock gear case and has the tools

after you put the gears in there isn't any room for structure support and you couldn't use the gears and races to help support the case from collapsing or crushing under pressure. I think you would be wasting your time. Not only that there is so many threaded locks and sealing surfaces.Plus you would never be able to pull a mold they way there shapped once you laid them up you'd never get them out of a mold cause of the bridges. It might be possible but you had better have tons of time and some good money when you start testing.
dont worry i can get it out of the mold no problem just depends how you make the mold
and i can make an all aluminum support frame and tap all the threads
but would it be better
lighter whos knows
has it ever been done

Volvo has a composite outdrive. Everything on the back of the boat is all composite. If they can do it I'm sure it can be done. But do you have enough money? I'm pretty sure it's gonna cost a bunch to make them and have some proto types made to experiment with before you go into production with them. The big thing Volvo did it for was corrosion resistance I don't know on an out boat if there would be that much weight difference to make the cost worth it. course with the stupid prices that Merc gets for things it wouldn't take much to beat their price.

Isn't Volvo's composite outdrive essentially just an outer shell? I've seen cutaways of it and there's a metal structure that contains all gears, etc.

I'm just dyin' to ask............... WHY?????????
Even if somebody with bottomless pockets wanted to undertake it, I think that CF would be a VERY POOR material to use in the skeg area. Isn't Kevlar added when it's used in many areas to make it rigid? No doubt that CF has tremendous strength when it comes to shear, but when it comes to rigid in relatively thin layup I'd think it'd be severely lacking.
The time/money/effort would be much better spent in other areas.

Perception is reality. Make some CF hoods/Motor cover or something that you could sell.

The above page has the easy way.
.
10-4 racerman on kevlar it is a must with any cf as far as i know
i was just curious
looking for opinions
i see it can be done thou
what hold the front of the prop shaft in place
i know the prop side is held by the carrier bearing
thats all i know about the gears on the inside
if it is to impractical thats probably why it hasn't been done yet
hey 300 i got a race car hood mold that i have popped three hoods out of so far but the boys who got them elected to go with a cheaper hood as it might just get broke in a crash
so far they have not crashed one yet lol

AFR if you bought a 260 or a 280 toally stock with a Sportmaster case and put it on your boat or any other boat that you might build ...you would soil your drawers and just concentrate on props and gasoline and oil to put in because you would not beleive how much high RPM power these motors make stock !!

I think your right, and we have about a half dozen of them in work all broken and had waranty replacement drives fitted.
tom im not a virgin here to a 260 280 or 3.4,s
and even johnson v-8
i was out last weekend on a 260 17 tunnel

That's Parker's case - it was a paint-like coating or something. Very well done though.

Hey Greg, you should get the carbon dip done! At least it would last a little longer!:D Sorry:p

Since we're talking about hypotheticals here, what about a STAINLESS STEEL case??? I know it would cost ALOT of money, but that aside wouldn't it work? I've seen those laser "robots" that can measure anything inside/out/sideways and take a 3-D "map" of an object which can then be put into a CNC machine and within an hour or two a block of billet is made into a thing of beauty. So if someone "mapped" a Sportmaster (custom cut of course, don't wanna have to "work" on a stainless case) couldn't they take a BIG block of SS and produce the same thing? How much stronger would the skeg be? I would think it could be bent several times before it broke.
Just wonderin,
RA

And man it sure would hold a SHINE!!!

what the difference between the navy A12 and aif force B-2 bomber. the a12 was so heavy it would take off [ needed 3 carrier to take off]. the b-2 bomber has a metal structure where the a12 was 100% composite. you need the strength of the metal in certain areas that the composite dont have. but if you got the time go for it. funnier thing have gone right.

make some carbon fiber windshields for a mirrage ski racer and if the price is right I would buy some, it would look cool on my boat, Matt

Take a stainless bolt and see how many times you can bend it before it fractures.

more times than a cast aluminum bolt would. :D
billet SS could be done if you want to spend roughly $8,000 on the material itself. billet aluminum would probably be a better choice. either way there would still be some post finishing with sand paper required. not much if it was done by a good programmer tho...
