I have a 1990 23.5' SC 454 Mag. This came stock with 25 prop. The guy I bought it from had put a 23 on. He gave me the 25, but he said it wouldn't get up on plane with more than 3 people in boat. I bought the boat 2 summers ago. Last year I experimented with the 25 & putting a stingray tail on. Disaster! Handling sucked. It did drop top rpm from 5200, to 4800. So I put 23 back and took tail off. I need some hole shot, as I pull my sons on ski's & knee boards. Has anyone had any experience with this boat setup? What about a 24 4-blade? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had a 1988 Regal 230 Velocity with the same 454 magnum (365 hp). Boat consistantly ran upper 60's (at about 5200 rpm) with a full tank and two people. I unfortunatelly cannot remember what prop I was running back then but I think it was a Mirage 23 or 24. The first thing I would do is have your engine checked out to make sure the compression is good and everything is operating as it should be. My Velocity never had a problem coming up on plane and once you hit the mid 50's you could always tell when it was riding on the pad, a pure joy to drive and very sensitive to drive input....even though it carried the Regal name (it was an early Regal Velocity while Steve Step was still involved in build quality) it was one of the best small boats I've ever owned. I would love to find a clean used one and drop a HP 525 into it!! You may want to try a Bravo one 24 pitch prop.

i'm a firm believer in fins, but on a i/o, it would have to be just a thin plate of metal. you normally done get the cavation plate out of the water like outboards with jack plates. the air foil effect of even the doel fins is just a joke. with all that weight in the tail, you sholud be look at 4-5 blades for the lift. then size for taste. one thought if you dont have them, would be hydraulic trim tabs. they can help the hole shot for i/o's. but make sure ther is atleast 3 degrees of negative up. that way their total out of the water for wot.

I forgot to mention, both top speeds were 66 by speedometer. I don't have GPS. The book says 4600-5000 rpm for this motor. Is 5200 too much? Also how big of a fin? How long & how wide? Is there one I could buy, or would I need to fabricate one?

What do you mean by can't get on plane? Does the motor just bog down for a while then it gets going or are you blowing the prop out?

I don't know what blowing the prop out, means? With the 25 last year, if I had 5-6 people, & coolers, & very much gas it would just plow, until I would have a couple people jump up in the cuddy, then it would come up on plane. I did check speedo against gps, it's right on. If blowing the prop out means it revs up without going anywhere, no this is not happening. How high of rpm is safe for this motor? Thanks.
