Any one know or were to find verifacation like a test on this package with a single 300 for top speed? What do ya think shell do with a single 300x. Any info would be great! I know a 21 MTR does 104-05 with a 300 but the 22 is totaly larger. James

The 22 is one of those boats that may be in my future someday. The Canadian company used to take the back page of HotBoat a few years back and advertise 91 mph (if I'm remembering correctly) with a 300x. It used to be part of their marketing to put out a package that they could guarantee a customer a turnkey stock over 90 mph rig.

I've got a neighbor with a 23 MTR and two 300x's. He'll run 110 with four men and full tanks. Fast, stable, large cockpits, they're awesome boats.

Cougar is now being built in the US again. They've moved (sold??) the company and all the molds are in the mid-west (Hill City Kansas). Go to Cougarboats.com. & enjoy.

thanks I looked in some Hot boat mags been getting them for 10+ years. I found it in a feb 2003 one they say mid 90,s when proped for top end and high 80,s with a ski prop. ya most of the info I was finding were inboard or twins. When they were down the road in Salmon arm I used to go talk to Tom Reynolds at the Cougar Shop. I couldnt believe how much over kill went into these hulls and the rigging. They were makeing one a month some times two completely by hand. The gelcote was sooo thick and the resin on the solid west coast fir was super thick also. New in 2003 they were 51 grand with a 300x. When they sold a few years back I was totaly surprized. The new company seems to be makeing some nice riggs but I havent seen a new one from them so cant compare. Thanks for the info I couldnt find anything at the time on the speeds with a 300. The 22,s are pretty rare with a single 300. Lots of 21 mtrs but not with the 300. The 21 with a 300 does 105.3 single. Its a toss up!! The 22 has so much more freeboard than the 21 but the 21 is soo much faster.

What do you figure on a heavy tub like this would do for speed with a single. If the garage was wide enough one of these or a DCB would be in there. I'd say 85 real world speed and 90 if you held your mouth just right, but I'm not that well informed so YMMV. It might be slower on smooth water but faster than the 21' when it gets bumpy?

I own a Cougar 22 MTR with a 300X. The fastest I have gone was somewhere between 105 and 108. That's according to my liquid filled Gaffrig speedo that tops out at 100. The speed is an estimate based on how far the needle went past the 100 peg. I was in the boat by myself and was running a 28" Merc prop on smooth water.
It's now for sale if you know someone looking. I live near Seattle.

I have a new 2006 22 MTR cougar with a 300x and run 104MPH on my GPS speedo. I am spinning a 30 pitch RE3 Mazco. This is my second 22 Cougar and can't say enough about the craftsmenship and the performance. The 21 is faster but the 22 can handle choppy water better and has way more room inside. The new owner Tony Poore is a great person and stands behind every boat that comes out of his shop.

Could one of you guys measure the widest part of the trailer or the boat or what ever sticks out on the side the farthest. Those are pretty impressive speeds. The magazine tests I read were nowhere near that. Maybe it's time for another garage remodel.

22MTR your 22 is stunning man!!! Im not sure but is Tony putting steps in the 22's hull? Thats a sweet top speed. I remember in an artical in Tunnel boat design that the Cougar had one of the most efficient hulls of any tunnel hull of that size. 104 for the new ones is awsome testament once again! The 96 mph with a 300 was from 2003. I believe that hull had no steps in her. That would sure free her up some more over that year model and the props these days are better also. Thanks for the info. One day Ill own one of these to put along side my Ally for company in the garage.:D James
