I recently purchased a 140 Evinrude from a friend and was wondering if anyone can help me figure out what year it is and if it's a looper or crossflow.
Model # E140TXCUA
Serial # G1446324

Thanks for any help!

most likely its a looper b/c in 87 they were rating the motors at the prop and 140 prop would be a looper but im not positive

Thanks for the help! That was fast. I believe it's a looper also because it looks skinnier than a crossflow, right?

If it's an '87, it's certainly a looper :)

I've been told that the looper will produce higher rpms than the crossflow, is this true and what kind of rpms can i expect with out blowing it up right away?

Don't try using a 25" motor on a Viper. That is an accident waiting to happen. Too high of a C of G.

HI. Ithink 6000 rpm is good thing to keep in mind,if you want dependable power. Either engine can turn more , whats important is to have the engine turning the prop not the prop allowing the engine to turn higher.[advantage looper more power band torque]. Agood weight carrying prop 24 raker lighter weight 26 to28 hipo style prop set-up is so important and fun thanks.

I didn't plan on using the motor as a 25" shaft, actually when I went to get it I thought that I was getting a 20" shaft but my uncle said we can change that motor to a 20", and seeing as how I got the motor for free I figure its worth a shot. It is turning out to be exactly the motor I was looking for besides the shaft length. Do you see this as a big problem? Does anyone know whats involved in the swap? What I'll need?

Find a scrap V4 and use the mid and clamp from it. On the gearcase you will need to change the drive shaft and shift shaft. No big deal.

Riverman, Do you know if I can use a 20" mid from a 88hp spl crossflow for my 140 looper?

I know for a fact the gearcases are interchangeable, don't know about the mid. Racer would know. :)

HI. Sorry I used a short form meaning hi performance, mostly designed for greater top speeds thanks.
