Looking for info on what motor to run on my 24' tritoon. Currently I have a 2003 2.5 liter 225X SS Merc running a high five 20 pitch prop and 20" sporty lower unit. An absolute gas hog and runs a max of 5800 rpm to move along at 30mph and probably 2 mpg. Getting passed by Grandpa in his pontoon with a 125 Force outboard!!! In need of more torque? longer mid to bury prop? torque master lower unit? Direct inj? Where should the prop shaft run in relationship to center pontoon bottom? currently 2" below pontoon. Would a new Optimax or XS be the same as this motor or better? How about a big 4 stroke? Any suggestions welcome! JG

here is some info http://forums.screamandfly.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122067

Wildman has 300xs in the box cheaper than you can find elsewhere, strap one of them bad boys on there and let it eat. It is still going to be a big heavy 24' pontoon, not a 18' race boat though.

300XS... you should se ALOT more speed than that from a 24... dats not right you spinnin a 20P at 5800 RPM you gots WAY TO MUCH SLIP.... thats yer problem... a 20P at 5800 SHOULD put you around 50 MPh...

Sounds like you have the wrong tri-toon. My Playcraft Powertoon GPS's @46mph with a 200 Merc Opti.

looking at the pics you may need a 25" motor..... and a better prop..... ditch the high 5 for a revolution4

toons need the prop about 6-8" below the pontoons to get below the turbulence in general..

My thought is exactly as suggested above about to much slip of the prop caused by the 20 pitch high five running to close to the surface with a 20" mid. I had the motor as an extra in the garage and decided to strap it on to see the results and am not happy. I either need to go up to a 25" mid or buy another motor. Is the 300XS decent on fuel and do they offer a 25" mid? The whole purpose of the tritoon was to get a little more top speed and fuel mileage but I have yet to see either with this motor.
