Rebuilding this Custom Craft Sting Ray. 14' steped hull, weighs about 350#. I want to put a 100 HP Merc on it, is this too much HP? the boat was originally rated for 45 HP. probably will use the cable steering for now, with upgrade to teleflex later. Not woried about the transome, pleny strong, or insurance. But am i going to get hassled by the water police? is it going to be safe as long as i 'm relativly carefull? any input would be appriciated.

Too much HP? No such thing! Will you get a ticket from the local water cops? maybe, probably depends on the venue and the officer and whether or not you pass the "attitude test". The old inline 6 100hp mercs have 10 to 15 percent less hp than a new 100hp (just the way they measured hp at the crankshaft in the 60's) Is the motor a short shaft? Your boat is probably set up for a short shaft motor. Will you take water over the transom when you slow the boat down? maybe. Will the boat plane and handle well with 100 more pounds on the transom. What happens when a friend tries to drive the boat and is not used to the excess hp? All questions you have to ask when overpowering a boat. Many of us on this board have overpowered boats and are here to tell about it. If you have the hp you don't have to use all of it, but it sure is fun. Just an opinion from someone who's been there and also used to be a water cop.

I have owned a few overpowered boats in my day so here are my two cents. The problem I encountered had nothing to do with the boats ability to handle the increase in power it was the unrealistic expectations I thought would be a result of this increase. One of my first boats was an old Starcraft Trihull. Real flat and 500 lbs at best. It had a 40 Johnson (max) and would top out at 35. I thought if I threw a 75 on it I would break 50. Put that thing in the water expecting to fly and it would’nt even break forty. Man was I pissed. But when I went fishing with a few beer bellied buddies it got right up and ran. No way that 40 would have done that. Now I could be wrong and if you make the change let us know the #’s Naiscoot

All good points. I was in a friends Manta Ray which is a cat hull and totally different, but same size. Went about 35 with an 80 with wrong prop and wrong motor hight. I'd be pissed if I didn't see 50. Without specific insurance I don't think any one else will be using this setup. Should be finding out how it works out in about 3-4 weeks. Working on transome and floor now.

Got her wet this weekend. Seems to run just fine. Probably got about 45 or 50 out of her first time out. Needs clutch and gears though, probably why she was put away all those years ago. The boat handled great. Got right up on plane and was actually pretty stable. Was running with just about 3 feet of the hull in the water. I'll probably keep the 19P on for general use, but can't wait to try the 23P after lower issues are taken care of. Needs carb and fuel pump rebuilds too, but what do you expect after sitting for close to 30 years?
