View Full Version : What the heck is an ELPTO??

Made an offer on a '86 Vegas XT 20' w/ a '86 200 ELPTO.........only one problem..........what the heck is an ELPTO? The guy says a 2.5 I'm no expert but isn't an ELPTO a 2.4 200? Any pitfalls or problems to this mota' besides the name? Offer is over the net accross country so I can't really get a closer look till I drive 1400 mi.
Any comments on the hull? Claims the hull handles 1'-2' chop well he's on the Great Lakes & they get rougher than Sarasota Bay any day. Also claims high 70's w/ a stockie? Will an XT hull really lift?

ELPTO (E - Electric Start) (L - Long) (P - Power Trim and Tilt) (O - Oil Injection) If I am wrong I am sure everyone will correct me. I knew I would miss something.

The 2.5L motors diden't come out till the early 90's. If you get a picture of the heads, you can tell if it's a 2.4 or 2.5. The 2.5 has a little bump-out where the alignment pin goes. On the port head, it would be in the upper left and lower right corners. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong on this. I don't remember any other obvious differences to look for.

AQUAholic (Randy Reinke) had a Vegas XT with a 2.5 200. He was getting right at 80 if I recall correctly.

Good luck!
A buddy up here is working on a deal right now on a Vegas in Louisville. It has a white motor though.

800-269-7225. ext 312. I am close to Fremont. 50 miles. I could go look at it for ya and get some pics. Is it at the dealer, Fort Fremont? They used to be one of the biggest Stream dealers around. I am sure Hydrovector and I could round up a couple Amigos to make the run for ya and check it out.

May be premature as the dealer kinda balked at my offer sayin' "oh I don't think he'll go for that"........you know typical dealer talk......the guy who owns the rig may be starvin' ta death who knows? Just tryin' ta get it right, heck I let my Vector go for $4500 for a quick sale, not ta have to hassle with prop spinners......

Balzy you got mail.........

Hey Nut......Ya think BL might be workin' on that XP yet? He may need it after all:cool:

Elpto? Anybody know what year they switched from external pump to intregal? '85/ '86? I like that big single ram better..

B.Mac,

I just deleted the info and pictures my buddy sent. I is $5000.00 and has a CMC jack plate. It looked real clean but I noticed single cable steering and the padded side panels weren't on it.

I think the motor is a 200. He's seeing if RL will go look at it for him. He's in Seattle right now and if all checks out, he'll rent a SUV and drive over to get it.

It would be cool to have another "North to Alaska" article for the IHR site.

He (Jared Bright) is also looking at a Virage that will be up for sale this fall. The Vegas will be a "hold me over" boat till then.

Jared lives in Petersburg, Ak. the same town my old Viking is in. The owner of the Viking just put a Optimax 200 on it with hydrolic steering and LWP. Guess what he paid for this???? (motor, steering, & LWP) Got your grease???? Bend over......bend over farther......
got your ears between your ankles???...$22,000.00.

OUCH!!!!!!!!

My nextdoor neighbor has an XT, and we have been out together many times. For what it is worth to you, his boat rides a lot rougher than mine. I have a Mirage Ski Racer. When you look at the two boats side by side it looks like the Hydrostream would be better, it is certainly bigger. It is also more sensitive to a second passenger. If we have one extra person, I always take them.

When he had a 2.4 200 on it he got 75 and it was just starting to fly. With a 2.5 245 he gets 88 and it is performing like it should. I think we can get a little more out of it with some tinkering. The 2.5 has not been on it long.

The Mirage is known for its good ride in rough water, but it is certainly not a bay boat due to the low freeboard at the sponsons.

Sounds about right to me...........maybe up to 6k w/ a decent Merc.
Man where was that fella with the Viking? I just sold a $17,000.00 Vector for $4500.00!!!!!

If I ever came home with a Mirage Ski Racer I would be ecstatic. JP Stancil had one for me.......Problem is my wife....ya see she doesn't understand that a Mirage is really a "family boat" and can be used for skiing (SKI RACER), Camping, daily outings, scuba diving, and runs to the store for milk........She ain't goin for it:( I'd be sleeping in it for months.........She rollerpinned me on BLs boat & that was one sssswwweeeeeetttt deal. At least if she sees the ski pylon & high freeboard she might be foo......persuaded into the "family boat" thing & I'll still make 85 w/ a few bolt on mods & some head work:D

I was not really trying to sell you on a Mirage. I think it would be the wrong boat for you, too hard core for the family. I just thought you might like the comparison and performance information. If I only had one boat, it would not be a pickel fork either.

the boat h-nut referred to is a vulture a 20 ft stream but a true v hull not a trap boat. witha 200 2.4 it runs upper 70s building a 2.5 lazer mtr to go on THE BUS and moving the 2.4 over to his vector project veczilla.
now b-mac a guy up in conn. has a super looking vegas yt boat and trailer only says it needs interior work in next year or so. told me 2500 he e-mailed me pics so i could show at our hot boat rally last weekend. pics i saw it looked good.
his e-mail is bdsullivan@attbi, check it out u may find it worth the ride. engines are a lot easier to find thay fast boats.
remember the bus will ride in ANY water u can find and with some nice v-6 power it will run as fast or faster than ur vec did.

Hey Dan I went to look at that vegas up here in CT about a month ago. It's a nice looking rig. The transom was professionaly replaced, looks very, very solid. The thing is all ready for a merc. Has hyd. steering (side ram style though). It has been sitting outside for about a year or so I think, so the weather has taken a beating on the interior. The trailer is so-so, nothing to write home about.

B.Mac, Give the guy a call if you're interested, I am positive he is negotiable on the $2500, I just don't know if he still has it. Here's his number 860-828-0533. (sorry I don't remember his name)

I was gonna buy it, but I ended up making a deal with Steve (cobra147) from here on S&F for his sleekcraft, I traded him my Venus and some cash, made the trade last weekend, we kept our motors though. Guess I have to change my name now. :) since I no longer own a venus.

My new sleekcraft

Thata a nice looking Vegas........it's alot of hull, looks perfect for bay chop. I'll try to call the guy. .......how close did you check her over? Does he keep it covered at all? Are these things cored? What made you bail? If you say she's a solid rig I may just make the trip (my eyes are still crossed from N.C. in 24 hrs.)
Thanks fellas I really appreciate the help & leads!

Hey, you want a family boat? Look real hard for a nice VOYAGER XT. That's the most innocent looking Hydrostream made. It's the open bow version of the Vegas XT hull. It will still run mid to upper 70's with a properly set up 2.4... (picture from the IHR)

Hey, there's one for sale on the board. Price sounds a little bit high, but nice...

I re-sized the picture below from the seller's post, so it doesn't take 1/2 hour to load...

It really would be a nice hull for the bay. My Venus was pretty similar and it would handle 2' chop pretty nicely. I got stuck in about 4'-5' chop one day and even in that I did alright.

I checked it over pretty good. The bottom of the hull itself was basically perfect. The deck up by the windshield was starting to develop a few minor stress cracks for some reason, but they are pretty minor. The interior was the biggest draw back, it deffinetley needs some new vinyl and probably some new wood at least for the rear bench.

The boat is covered, just a big blue tarp. It just didn't seem to keep the weather out so great.

The only reason I bailed is cuz I had already started making negotiations with Steve for the sleekcraft. The deal I made with him worked out pretty good since I didn't have to worry about getting rid of my hull and trailer, he was willing to take it in trade, even knowing everything it needed. Plus I really like the lines of the sleekcraft and it was more like what I was looking for since I will be running mostly on the CT river now as opposed to on the bay down on Long Island so I wanted a lighter/faster hull.

"Are these things cored? "

I am not sure, but I think so.

When you call him, you could tell him I sent you too, just tell him Pete with the red VW. He was willing to give it to me without the trailer too, probably for about $1800-$2000. So if you have a trailer already this would save you even more.

Let me know if you would want me to go back up and check out anything else about the boat more specific. Like one thing I didn't have him do was slide the fuel tank forward so I could check out the floor in the back by the transom as this is where they would start goin first. Cool! That is one funny looking bottom.

Have Venus check it out real good, then go from there, starting low of course. That's one long long drive :( I wish I could help but Jr.#3 will be born on the 22nd.

Use the "The trailer is junk" excuse for a serious low-ball :D Besides, for that distance you just may need a new one ($1200-1500??), if you don't find a used one in time.

I like that Voyager, but mostly because of the race bred powerhouse on the back :D ;)

Thats a nice hull & I'd rather go turnkey anyday but a Suzuki?
Yamaha maybe.......but Suzuki? I'd have to paint it white & put Johnrude stickers on it at least so's I would'nt get laughed off the lake:eek: Just kidding.....I e-mailed him to low ball him.....maybe
$4k w that Suzuki/ $5500 if it was a Merc. That way when it corrodes off the back of the hull I got a start on a Merc:p
Thanks for lookin' out for me Pete!!!
I talked to Brennan, also did some research on his posts "Cman" nothing alarming about the Vegas, any chance you could call me, maybe swing by there (if it aint to far & look her over a little closer?) I'm interested in the Starboard jetski collision repair, transom replacement & floor at transom? Also stress cracks on deck, are they lateral & in the same location both port & starboard which may indicate a weakening box stringer system (Deck flexation). Here's a major issue......does the trailer look like it'll make 1500 mi trip? Please call or mail me :D
Thanks for your help!!!!!!!

Yeah, I don't know about that motor either. But if he takes your low ball offer it may be worth it. Maybe you could even find someone to buy that suzuki and slap a merc on there. Granby is pretty far from me, but if you wanted me to check it out, I could probably find some time on the weekend or something.

As far as Brennan's boat, I think I am kinda leary about it now. He never told me about the jetski incident, I don't like people who try to hide something like that. Though it deffinetley looked like a good repair, cuz I couldn't see it, but then again I wasn't looking. But I will take another look at it, if you want.

I don't know that I would trust the trailer. If you were to buy it, I would at least repack the bearings up here before you left, I could help you out with that and anything else you need for the trip at my shop before you left.

I am gonna be pretty tied up for the next few days (physics final on tuesday) but after that I would be available to check it out for ya. Give me a call wed. or thu. on my cell 203-671-9090 or leave a message at my house 203-315-1239.

That may solve the trailer issue, just slap new hubs before you leave, that's a great offer Venus! The rest will be fine with a new roll of duct tape and a handfull of bungee cords and tie downs.

Check those cracks out first.

You've got such a way with words..........." a roll of duct tape and handful of bungee cords.........."
Glad I'm not the sensitive type:( Believe me when I say, I've thrown out all my resin, cloth, bubble roller & acetone. I never, never want to see fiberglass again..........I don't care if I gotta build a Merc from scratch but I aint doin no more glass or paint (that is unless I hit a jetski while airing it out to nudge out a certain Sterling)
The hulls gotta be turnkey bolt on & go.......

Pete, you study bro......I'm not interested in that Suzuki unless I got it free w/ the hull & even then I want it off the hull. Brennan's suppose to send me a bunch of pics.......If they look good I may offer 1k if no glass work is needed.

Pete....Here's a physics question?..........One 20' XT + ? HP MERC @ ? setback to spank one pickleforksurfboardthang (Sterling/ OMC)? Answer........none, twin 'lectric thrust motas' oughta be enough!:D :D :p ;) Thanks Pete:D

Ok let me recalculate assuming the hull IS turnkey....

In that case all you'll need is a 300X, a handful of rod bearings and 1 quart can of marine tex for the holes in the block. :D

Don't make me put my XP on the Sterling now! Besides, it won't match being blue! :(

For some reason... I don't feel threatened
