OK, so I starting to gather parts for a 245 build - maybe 275hp after ruck is done with it. I am pretty sure Im gunna run a 200 promax (5peddle) fronthalf and 4 peddle sportjet reeds. Motor wont need to go past 8000 so this should be good for some "lower" end grunt. I got some sportjet reeds, but everything I read says there are good ones and bad ones - how do you tell the difference? I dont know what year they are, but they do have metal reeds - do I need to get fiber reeds for these coated cages or what?

The term "Sport Jet" reeds comes from the reeds that were fitted in a Mercury 240 HP EFI Jet Pumped engine several years ago and they are 5 petal not 4... If you have the 4 petal rubber coated reed they come from a late model 2.5 fishing grade motor that will retro fit in the place of the older 5 petal 200/150 engine and do breath better ( I retro fit that change alot with a great deal of success ) . Most after market reeds ( I use nothing BUT and have good luck with Tony Doukas Racing Reeds) are fine for lower 8000 rpmed engines. The newer reeds that are fitted on the NEWER 5 Petal reed cages ( new style 280's ) from Mercury are a bit stiffer and have been found to rob some top end RPMS off 10,000 + rpmed engines....

Good luck,

ok - so i have to replace the metal reeds on the cages? I guess i was under the impression the due to the fact the cage was now coated, it made it ok to use metal reed becuase now they wouldnt frag - i was wrong about that? I understand the whole 4peddle replaces 5peddle and 5 peddle replaces the 7peddle stuff. I am also aware that there is really no performance gain with these reeds, just the fact that last longer - which is wahat im looking for. Thanks for any help.

I am also aware that there is really no performance gain with these reeds, just the fact that last longer

Not ness tha case!!...Tha thickness/stiffness/dual/single dezign doez effect performance...Az Jay stated, the stiffer reeds have been known to knock off top rpm...And az for lasting longer, NOT ALWAYZ TRU!!....BUT, the glass reeds are safe'r!!!....If one did break, or splinter(which U stand a good chance at higher rpm), it will most likely take out a cyl, or maybe 2!!!....Glass will more or less give U a "spit" and save tha cyl!!....

The TDR reeds(IMO) are the best.,,.I cut my own, but I use the same type material az doez TDR, and I've tested a lot ov diffrent styles and thickness's, and the TDR single peddle on the 4 peddle cages work best, and last!!..

Now az for which 4 peddles are better, I'm lost, kuz I never knew ther wuz a differnce!!!....I have flowed theze rubber coated cages on tha bench, and they will flow(in stock configeration) az good az a set ov modified 5 peddles!!!...The rubber does soffen tha "Slam" for a lil longtivity of the reed, and gives a better seel for a better punch...Don't worry about the RPM limit, because tha good the 4 peddles do on bottom and midrange iz quite a bit, and U won't loose nutt'in on top.....I have a f-1 2.0, which came EFI and 14 peddle front...With carbed front and 14 peddle, it wuz a pig out tha hole, and left a lot to be desired to 7K...BUT turned 11,500 once it caught it'z breath!!!.....I went to the 4 peddle front, same carbs(bored 22's) and a set ov single peddle reeds(mine)...Tha lil mota woke up on bottom/mid and still turned 11,300-400........It picked up a full second and a half from idle to 50mph with only a 100 or so top rpm loss!!!,,,They WILL flow quite well!!!...

tha amaze'in thang iz I have ta agree wit everthang Pee Pee said...What da hell iz happen'in???.....Agree'in ain't neer az much fun az disagree'in:D :D

A spacer plate from Jay at SST will help that setup.
It works very well and helps acceleration and torque.
Money well spent!

Also the 4 pedal is not ""RUBBER"" coated. It's a hard plastic molded reed cage. ""HARD PLASTIC" And has very little metal in the frame. (and the metal itself is very soft)

Be careful when tighten them down they will separate.

If it's carb go with a single reed,
if it's EFI Boyesen Dual Stage are best.
Make sure the mounting surface on the reed and the intake adapter is perfect flat.
