I want to put an old Ride Guide steering system into my resto project. When buying a NOS cable I see its marked for no more than 50hp. Is this true? Are the old systems really only good for 50hp? I'm putting a 125hp motor on the boat, I would install a new system but I need the look of the old wheel and it will not mount on any of the new systems.

Any advice?

My Stream came with Ride Guide, I've run it for over 30 years with no problems whatsoever. I replaced the right side cable a couple years ago, the left side cable was installed in 1977, and is still fine. I've run a V-6 since 1982, currently have a 200, and no problems.
50 HP limit sounds like nonsense to me, but as you increase engine size, you want a dual cable system.

We lost a good friend yesterday when his steering broke in his stv euro sending him through the side of the boat. He had dual ride guide and was only going 40-50mph. No way i'd ride in a boat with single cable steering. I'm sure there's a reason for the 50hp rating. Good luck and be safe.
Dave.

Looks like I'm going to use a modern system and have my machine guy make an adapter for my old ride guide steering wheel (actually pre ride guide Kiekhaefer wheel) with the square hole in the back fit the new hub.

The Ride Guide system will handle whatever hp you put to it if you have the correct cables. It must be a dual set up for safety. If that particular cable says 50hp then it's the wrong one.

It's my understanding that Byrons bolt (the one at the tiller connecter) broke causing the accident. Had nothing to do with being ride guide.

single ride gulide was for motors less than a v-6. for v-6 and up dual is required. i had a 1988 ridegulide in my HS with the square wheel fitting. just make sure the cable is in good shape. when they get stiff replace them.
