View Full Version : Signs of bad trim pump motor?

Have a midsection from a 92 200hp motor, 3-ram trim sys. Just hooked it all up the other night and motor runs REAL slow and wires get REAL hot very quickly so I can't run it much at all. Also air in system, I presume from all the jossling around in shipping and whatnot. Anyhoo, date of mfg on the electric motor itself is in 2002. I presume the motor is prolly shorted somehow inside? Is it easy to fix these motors, or easier to just pick up another one? Will pull it off today sometime. Just wonder if I should start surfing for another motor. Also, how would you bleed this system? Just run it up and down a few times once I have a working motor or is there a process to bleed it? Thanks!
Brian
Running it fully up and down a couple of times will bleed the system, yes.
Wires shouldn't get hot. Might be a hydraulic blockage, but most likely the trim motor needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

I had the same thing happen to me this year. The mid was stored for a month or so horizontally on the floor and next thing you know, started acting up same as yours. I was ready to replace the pump when someone suggested I pull the check valve on what looked like a drain plug. The o-ring had dried out and cracked. .39 cents later and I was back in business.

So yours ran really slow and drew a ton of current too? Got a pic of where your're talking about?

Sorry, no pics...
Mine is a 200 evinrude...there is a fill plug at the top of the right cyl. and what looks like a drain plug at the bottom of the left cyl. When I pulled the left plug, there was a valve inside the housing that I had to pull out with a needle nose pliers. The bad o-ring was on this valve along with a spring on each end. I don't know if yours is the same or not, but I would assume they are similiar. If the pump isn't leaking fluid, it must be a seal issue.

Check your wiring, sounds like the ground don't make it through the relay.

I'll have to check that today, but how would that make it draw mega current and heat up the wires so much? I'd think that'd make it not get the required power and nothing would get hot, maybe the ground where the bad connection if any, but it's the (+) wires that are getting HOT.
