I know the Merc HIpoof manual says that the max cylinder out of round and taper is .006 inch. What kind of experience has anybody had with trying to rering a motor that has a cylinder at .006 and the rest at .004 total oversize and out of round and taper.

Is it a Nik motor? You can fix them if they are out of round. Call Ruck on it. He fixes them all the time. If its steel then I don't know if they can be made round, but I know he's done a few of my blocks and they measure great afterwards. Steve

Thanks Steve. It is all nic. I didn't want to take it all apart. Was just wondering if a "race" rering is a waste of time and new rings.

I think its $10 a hole to straighten out rounds. He can turn it around quick too. His guizmo can be used with the motor assembled. You could make one if you wanted. Email me and I can describe what he does and how. Take care. Steve

If it's out of round it has to be worn...if it's worn material has to be added. How do you know where to add the material and how do you put the hole in the appropriate place to align the rod with the crank? Is this all done by machine? It seems like there has to be guesswork somewhere.

Nik cylinders go out of round because they are much weaker then the steel bores not from wear. Steel bores wear but don't stretch near as much. Merc uses an open deck and the top of the bores are moving all over the place at high rpms. The aluminum stretches into an egg shape. The Nik also wears but not as much as you might think. Again, check with Ruck, he can tell you more about it. He has been successful at fixing some out of round bores fairly cheaply and they run great afterwards.
