I'm Looking At A Spectre Cat Hull , Been Down This Road Before Only To Back Out Because I Did Not Want A 2.5 Efi Because Of Short Life Span . I Like The New Opti 250 , How Do They Compare Performance Wise To A 2.5 Efi [ 280hp] ? In The Real World Of General Performance Boating , Wide Open Not All The Time , Will They Last ? [hrs ] And Also Who Has The Best Prices And How Much Is A 20 Inch 250 Opti ????? Larry

Depends which Opti you are talking about...If it is a 250XS, they are very reliable, few issues with them, good performance, and should last just as long as any fishin motor out there.

If it is the Opti 250 ProXS, then I'd be giving it a bit longer to get the kinks worked out. ;)

How many hours before rebuild on 250 xs ??? How much longer than a 2.5 efi offshore ?

They are a performance fishing motor that should go many, many seasons without a rebuild. I'd be thinking 1000+ hrs before a rebuild....All of the DFI motors on the market realistically "should" go thousands of hours before a freshening up is needed....;)

I'm putting 300xs motors on my new 30ft Liberator cat. The Opti's will run a long time without going inside them. You will probably want the offshores with the stronger mids and trim pump in the boat. I can get you a RH offshore with Sportmaster for $15,200 and the LH for $15,450. Email liberatorboats@yahoo.com

I have a 96 225ProMax that had its first rebuild last year. I know a guy thats 97 225 ProMax is aproching 2000 hours with out a burp! He was so confedent with his moter he uped the HP this year with out a rebuild. New 33cc heads and an ACU from Bucato so far so good. Im not exactly sure about the 260-280,s but if I remember corectly about every 150 Hrs or so they sould have the rings done? Dont Quote me on that.;) They are high revers so top pinned pistons and all the good stuff is manditory with motor reving 7500-9000+.Not the same animal as a 250XS. Remember the 2.5 block is the same on a 200 as is the 280 only all grone up! The 300 would make a great motor for your cat! They are more like the 225 when it comes to low maitenance. They are there own block. Not the same as the 200 and up 2.5,S The 250XS would make a great combo to. The high revers are the best package because the rpm gives you more bang. But if you just want power and less maintanence I would be looking at a 300X!! Not the 250XS. I have a 225 and wish already I had more power! Thats the thing hear, once youve gotten used to the Hull and can ring er out nice youll always want more power! So my advice would be to get it over with and go for the 300X or the 300XS. The X is the lighter motor. If you can find witch Im sure you can a low hour 300X you will save a ton of money over even a 250XS. An example would be if you could afford a new Mustang GT or a Mustang SVT Cobra thats two years old with low low milage and mint for almost Half the price of the GT which would you buy. James P>S> sorry Randy I was writing at the same time as your post.:D The 250XS would be way more fuel efficant than the 300,s and give you great performance but the 300 will give you better performance:)

My understanding is that Optis are designed for "high-hundred" hours between rebuilds, i.e. 800-1000. That is the same as for Merc fishing engines.

2.5 EFIs on the other hand are 100-200 hour engines.

Thats what I heard . Here is the way I look at it , 250xs , super clean non smoking outboard , 87 octane instead of 93 , and trust me it adds up when you go through 150 gal a weekend . Yes I know the 300 x is faster , but the boat will still run very high 90's . Larry

I'm running two 2003 250XS's with close to 1000 hours on each. The only problem I've had was one engine had to have a new powerhead at around 300hours and had to replace the DFI air compressor (warranty items) other than that they've run great. You couldn't ask for better engines they never miss a beat....running at around 3000rpms I burn around 6 1/2 to 7 gph per engine....open them up and it's around 30 gph per engine. As far as reliability I have taken my boat to the Bahamas and back and even at 1000 hours on the engines it wouldn't bother me to do it again. I'll be selling or trading these in soon and will probably upgrade to the 300XS's.
