First off can anyone tell me how to identify an XP as opposed to a regular 235, besides the XP decal.
And, what are the differances between a regular 235 and the XP 235??
Any info wwill be greatly appreciated
Thank you

A regular 235 model number will include 235T in the middle. The Evinrude XP or Johnson GT will be 235ST. The S is added between the horsepower and the T for power trim.

Never owned or turned a wrench on one but I think main differences were porting on the intake side. The block is milled in the transfer port and the piston is scalloped. Ports are milled square instead of drilled. Better heads for premium gas like the early engines. Louvered cowl. Same size carbs but I'm sure it was jetted different. Longer megaphone maybe. That's all I remember. I'm sure you can find more info with a forum search.

Barry got most of the major differences. The 235S model has a different gearset in the lower. It is the same ratio, but is shimmed both forward and reverse. The lower motor mounts are the (green) stiff ones. (Possible that some of the regular 235's had the green ones also.) The engine came standard with a set of single petal (white) composite reeds. Was rated to run between 5000 and 6000 rpm. It was not hp rated in the sales brochures at the time, but an article was written on one that test one of the years a 240 crank hp. The original engines came timed at 32, but a subsequent service bulletin reduced the timing recommendation to 30. There were 2 packs, one unlimited, the other was a rev limiting one. Can't remember if it was 6200 limit or not.
