Stoker1, no, not John Marles (US1) although he does have one too...another John out here on the West coast. I believe he lives in Havasu now. That pic was in Havasu a few weeks ago. Beautiful boat.

cc, it's called a Silverwing.

that design was originally built for an I/O setup for the parker 9 hour. a "super cool" dude named Jim Wilks, somewhere in so cal near LA has the molds, he owns "Wilks Marine" and is a regular column writer and tester for Hot Boat Magizine. one day i hope to meet him. fun out

I BELIEVE I READ SOMEPLACE "WILKES MARINE" THE "V-DRIVE KING" HAS BUILT AND WILL BUILD " LIMITED NUMBERS" ONLY FOR VERY "SEASONED TUNNEL BOAT PILOTS!!!" I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT MAG -POWERBOAT OR HOTBOAT, WITHIN THE LAST FIVE YEARS ????
IT WOULD BE A GREAT MATCHUP TO DO A TEST WITH THE LIBERATOR 21'
HEAD TO HEAD ?????????????
WILDMAN VS WILKES, TWIN DRAG MOTORS ON EACH BOAT OR AT LEAST TWIN 280'S.
ALSO THE ARTICLE SAID THE BOAT COMES FROM SEABOLD DNA, F-1 TUNNEL?

I thought it was a Seebold Warrior pop mod.Wilkes had a Silverwing with and outdrive and a badass motor that set big #'s and was featured in Hotboat but that was in the early-mid 90's.I think Howard Arneson had one with a tubine also with a speedmaster. It was featured with his turbine Scarab and Twin turbine 32 Skater The Skater had to remote control trolling motors on the k-planes to get him to open water.I think I still have that issue in my container full of boat shop junk.I'll look.

The boat was done by the FITSCHENS and the LEMBKES shop in orange, Ca. called SPEED & MARINE ASSOCIATES way back in the late 80's. They can still be built, the molds are still in great shape, by WILKES MARINE, in Santa Ana, Ca. They also raced one of these hulls, as a single seat race version, after winning the 1985 Parker Enduro with a Jaguar V-12 and a Mercruiser Super Speedmaster short #2 outdrive powered SEEBOLD .

SPEED & MARINE, also built the molds, and produced a few boats that were the SILVERWING 2027 and SILVERWING 2034 (the one in other posts that belonged to the Herbst family) that HALLETT BOATS now has.

Ron Jones was king, Bob Nordsgog had the first one i remember. wiped up the Parker 9 hr, nothin could hang. i remember the video of mr Marles years ago, then along came Wildman, only thing John said after all the big trip dig #s talk was, "i'd like to run him" my money says silverwing is a superior design to the old ELIMONATOR , that was more a adolecent daytona design than a performance first comfort later serious flying macheen. :D deet de de  fun out

I don't have any inside pictures and the boat is still all covered for winter. Last time I talked to Wilks he said he will build one for a pro tunnel boat driver or someone who can prove their tunnel experience. Its not the speed, he is concerned about its F1 turning abilities and someone getting hurt. Thats why he stopped building them in the late 90s.

Those true tunnels are much more difficult to drive fast than the Mod-VP style bottoms. Had a good friend and very experienced racer killed in testing (before capsules) when he moved up to a tunnel.
BTW, I had the pleasure of seeing a few of these run in parker in the 80's. And Lembke's with the Jag V-12 was the only inboard to win the Parker Enduro in about the last 2 decades.

so is this boat only good for a single purpose of racing and has characteristics that would render it undesireable for pleasure boating with an occasional hammer down for a brief period ? with the weight and the length i would think that if you put a single 280 on it, would be much more stable and with a drivers ability and judgement to handle a true tunnel would be a fun and safe ride..

Its the best family boat I have ever owned. Runs right over big chop at 100 plus. Easy to drive too. It's just it's ability to turn that Wilks is worried about. It doesn't do anything funny unless you crank the steering wheel hard to the left at 100 MPH, then it turns no questions asked. You loose you ice chest and family but it turns.

I bet it was a legal manoeuver like this ... her lawyer comes up with a doctor's note that says she has some minor condition that is on a list of minor conditions that requires the Sherrif to send her on home detention ... the one the judge should be going after is the lawyer who the judge probably directly asked in court if such a condition existed and the lawyer said no. Now the lawyer is going to say he didn't know .... the judge should hold the lawyer in contempt of court and throw his butt in jail too ... but not with Paris ... instead with Bubba

Mark75H
06-07-2007, 10:30 PM
I think you are right. The solution is at the judge's disposal ... he can throw the lawyer in jail for contempt anyway ... it might not stop him from trying it on another judge ... but it won't happen again in that judge's court. The judge can even throw the doc in jail for contempt if he thinks it's fishy

I can't wait to hear how this comes out

Thats what I'm sayin John.My Sterling is a 19 Daytona with no center pod basicly.I out ran a 21 Daytona bad in a 3'slop with a smooth ride.Untill somebody that has never be in both rides it they can't get close to understanding. It was real easy to run though water I couldn't stop in or it would sink in 3 waves.Times I got trapped into running close to full throttle to keep from stuffing.I know that Silverwing would be the ticket if you run big water.Mt t3 locked the steering linkage in the webbing of the clamp bracket when I backed off making a turn in a little creek and sent me into a tree.It tore the bottom of my port sponson off below the cap and cracked the edge of the bow all the way to the center.I drove it across some rough stuff to get to the ramp and it never got wet.I think Rocket Ron got pics from his baja.I lovem.

Greg Foster drove the Jag V12 at the Parker Enduro. I was talking to him about it. He said he would go into the turn wide open at 135 MPH. It would pull so many Gs he said he was sure the motor was going rip right out of the boat. He was serious. I dont think Wilks is interested in building any Silverwings. It would pull so many Gs he said he was sure the motor was going rip right out of the boat. He was serious. I dont think Wilks is interested in building any Silverwings. Something happened to really scar him about the liability. I do agree he should just say so if thats the case. He is a nice guy.

I see Wilkes all the time. I go to lunch with him about every other week. I was sitting in his office when someone called asking about one of these boats. He is all about saftey. Everynow and then he will call me up and ask me to help him test a boat. If it's a go fast rig, he'll make sure everyone involved has a proper saftey gear on or no testing. Wilkes would entertain building one of these rockets, but it would only be on his terms, to someone who has experience and askes the correct questions when interested. Coming in with an attitude and stating your driving credibilty won't get you anywhere.

A realistic time frame, I figure, would be around 12-18 months to complete. These are not "cookie cutter" boats, everyone is rigged one-off. I would conservativly say that one of these boats rigged with a 280 would run mid to upper 80's. They are not layed up like a STV, but much heavier. You can actually walk on the sponsons with no worries about damaging them (not a dig at STV's).

The boat at the beginning of this thread was built by Speed & Marine. It originally had twin 200s on it, then was rerigged by DCB, and then rerigged again to a single 200. It was for sale for quite a while in San Diego. Someone in Havasu bought it, then it was bought by John (as Keith said). John rerigged the boat once again with the twins it has on it now.
