87' Evinrude 200 looper.

I'm telling you now that I know very little about the electronics of an outboard. I'm very mechanical but suck at wiring. I bought a new 7000 rpm teleflex tach and can't get it to work at all. It says it's for outboards with alternators which mine doesn't have. When I called them they said no one makes tachs for outboards without alternators. Someone elese told me that all outboards have some sort of charging system. I this is so, how can I hook up this tach and make it work. I have a print out of the electronics so I can identify the proper parts but don't know where to start.

Would appreciate any help...

Thanks,

Rob

Your engine does have an alternator driven system, the tack gets its pulse from the regulator.

Grey wire to sender pole on tack, purple to power and blackto ground set the tack on 6

That's the way I had it originally wired using the 3 wire harness from the motor. Then I did the alternative which was to run a direct lead from the engine electrical strip (gray/yellow wire) to the sending pole per the instructions. The tach spins all the way around clockwise and back to zero when fired regardless of the wiring described above. I'm at a loss???
