Scott, why don't you make em do it over? Powder coating can be added to and will flow out uniformly. I did one of my old Champ housings in black with my home powder coat kit and it had some thin spots when I took it out of the oven. I just put some more stuff on it and cooked it again. The stuff doesn't seem to stick quite as well when overcoating, (during the application only, after it's heated it's the same as the original application) I guess the previous coat insulates the electric charge or something.
You might want to consider one of those Eastwood kits if you've got much more of it to do. They're not very expensive and do a good job if you've got access to an old oven. I got a used one from a used appliance store that the burners on top don't work on and leave it in the back of an old warehouse, but Ive seen people keep em outside under a cover. Somebody on one of the old car websites I play on said the Harbor Freight unit works real well too and it's cheaper than the other one.

I agree with Raceman. If it stinks, take it back. Any decent businessman will make it right.
I also agree with the do-it-yourself kit. A friend of mine had one a couple of years back. Damn thing worked great. I did a bunch of stuff. My favorite is translucent over a polished surface. Powdercoat is wonderful stuff, it will stick where paint won't. Plus its super easy to do.
If your powdercoat guy screwed it up, he must really be helpless. The stuff is really hard to mess up. Unless what you are trying to coat is dirty or oily.
Here is my transom jack that I polished and did in a translucent blue. In the sun it really lights up!
I vote for the make them do it over too.

I talked to him last night. He'll do it over. He is useing the D.I.Y. system (Hot Coat) from Eastwood Co. Most of the other pieces he's done looked ok, but the Plate was just too screwed up to use. I agree I aint buildin' no 40K show piece, but what ya'll see when done says something about how I do things. We're building the Baja on a family of 5 budget, there just isn't alot of cash to "waste" so I was dissapointed to see the plate.
Laser, that looks damn good! It's a nice "custom" touch!
With the graphics done, I had hoped to spray the clear coat this weekend, but there's still alot of wet sanding to do! The Baja's commin' allong rather quickly at this point! Carpet, the rear seat and it's Rigging time!
Thanks again!

I wish I had maybe gotten a tad bit "wilder" w/ the graphics, but I have a tendenancy to over-do, still have to find that mid point between custom and gawdy!

Scott…
It’s always inspiring to see someone finish these damn boat projects…I have been eating fiberglass and sanding for the better part of a year…weekends just ain’t enough.
How did you lay those stripes out…did you free hand tape or did you use a template to trace before taping?

We drew a sketch on paper of what we wanted the boat to look like, then free handed them from there. There was allot of taping, lookin, pullin! Still have some slight waves here and there but not many. It took allot longer to do than I anticipated, I can't imagine how long some of the more radical striping jobs must take! Whatever you do, use 3M's "Fine line" series of tapes! Absolutely no bleed under and nice crisp lines. Pulled clean even after 4 days of sittin under 4 coats of paint! Sorta' expensive but worth every penny! Either buy your paper for masking from the automotive paint supplier or use at least 2 layers of paper, the paper you get at your local home improvement store will bleed through! Of course you probably knew all that already:rolleyes: I, on the other hand, was a complete novice so it was learn as ya go!:(
It's been just over a year, still shooting to have it done by the Rumble, might be close:confused:
Have fun! POST PICS!!!!!
