I've just completed the restoration of my 13.5 foot ski boat

old pic:

The hull has no planing strakes no pad and resembles a rounded flat bottom at the transom, the boat weighs in at 410lbs

I have 3 motors i could install, they are all 20" and will be mounted on a 5.5" setback jackplate for the 15" transom

1982 Merc 70 no tilt 12 spline < hard to find props

1990 Suzuki DT75 tilt/trim 13 spline has a bobs nosecone w/ lwp

1994 Evinrude 70 tilt/trim 13 spline and is in the best condition

They are all triples, the merc only has 2 carbs and is the least beefy looking and weighs the least by 40-50 lbs but it doesn't have tilt trim.

Discuss :)

I would go with the lightest motor. My family had a 62 when I was a kid and it was real sensitive to weight in the back.

When I was a teen I owned a 68 G3 with a 68 85hp evinrude. Same issue.

Placing the 6 gallon gas tanks under the bow also will help. Get a long fuel line.

Did it seem to have a flighty bow? Or too light in the bow?

Never saw the bow as flighty. Then again the speeds were about 45 mph on the Airguide speedo with the 85 if I remember correctly.

Bow seemed light because of the weight of the motor hanging off the back. That 1968 85HP Evinrude was BIG. Constantly got hassled by the Sheriff to make sure it wasn't overpowered. Getting on plane with 4 people required that the back seat passengers had to come up front until on plane then sit back down.

If I remember, the bow has a nice deep V. That will help it in the chop. It should be a fun boat for skiing and a day on the lake.

I have 4 G-3s and have powered them with 50 hp, 80 hp and 100 hp inline Mercs. I have the fuel tank mounted under the bow and get a good ride with each of the engines. The 50 hp probably gives the most per cu. in. but the 100 hp is a lot more fun. Speeds vary from around 40 mph with the 50 Merc to around 50 with the 100 hp. The speed would improve greatly if I took the weight out of the front and placed the steering station on the center deck. If I wanted a "go fast" boat only, I would keep as much weight aft as possible and use a Mercury with tilt/trim. If you are a computer kind of guy, there is a G-3 Club. Guys have been known to run V-6's on the old G-3's.:) Capnzee

thanks cap for the reply
what is the url for the G-3 club?

So i think I'm going to go with the Suzuki DT75 with the nose coned lower. I can run it high and not worry about pressure plus it is a sought motor. the 5.5" jackplate will keep the weight back and the bow high.

What pitch prop should i be looking for? The lower looks to be a 2:1 i want to run 5500- 5800 rpm and around 55 mph... I'm thinking a 23-24 pitch should be fine.

If you want a proper matching motor I have a mark 78 Short shaft that needs a good restore and a new home... I found it in a pile of scrap a guy was pawning.. its all there just needs a bit of TLS and a rebuild as its hard to turn.. make ya a great deal on her to....

otherwise use the lightest motor with trim and tilt.. and see if you can find a 15" mid for the motor you choose.. (they are available if you loook hard enoough) keep the jack plate and raise her to the moon... she will be a nice little boat when yer done

In you search box just type in glasspar g3 and go to any that say fiberglassics,it will lead you to more info than you ever wanted! Right now they are showing pics of the rally we just had in Ocala FL. Your 70hp evinrude is a good choise, there where several at the rally including a stinger shorty with a 50hp lower that realy hauled.....I have a red 65 open deck and 2 center decks like you have, If you go to the site look for the one they call Reggie, thats mine. I think we had 15 in the lake and another 7-8 on land in various cond. Chris runs a 225 v6 merc on his......we gottem from mild to wild. If ya cant find the site e mail me @ [email protected] and I will send ya a link.

225+ ship.

it needs a complete go through and a controll box that will work wth the direct reverse thus the low price.

there was another motor around that i saw on here that was a DR motor.. same vintage.. if you could get it with controls then you could get mine as a spare parts motor..

I tried an old 70 hp "tower of power" on my G-3 and didnot gain any speed over the old 44 cu. in. 50 hp Merc. (may have even gone slower-it was heavier) The 100 hp in line got me about 5 mph more. If you want to go fast, move your fuel tank/weight back, buy a modern engine (v-6), beef-up the transom, bolt a set-back on your transom and hang on. If you want to go kinda fast but don't have any money, move your steering station back to the center deck, get a good V-4 or in-line 6 with a 15 inch mid-section and go for it. The thing you gotta remember is the boat was made for the old motors with a 15 inch mid-section. If you are going to put a newer engine with a 20 inch mid-section, you simply must "jack" the engine so that the cavitation plate is a couple of inches above the bottom of the boat. You really want an engine that has tilt/trim. If you have any American Engineuity you can build a trim unit. If you just want to be comfortable and take 4 people for a nice ride, put the fuel tank up front, bolt anything you want on the back and go cruising. Of the engines you listed, the 70 hp Evinrude is probably the best--if it has tilt/trim. You will never know what you have until you have tried it--and I'm not so sure any one can tell you exactly how to do it. I only know that the G-3's were not the bullets we thought they would be when they came out back in the late 50's! If you wanted to go fast, you bought a "yellow-jacket", put two Merc 50's on it, like Roy Rogers did and you moved right into the "jet-set". Capnzee
