Will everyone PLEASE UPDATE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE! I have had 4 emails sent to me today with viruses. The attachments dont have to be opened to infect, just highlight the subject line to read them and your infected. If you think youre safe without antivirus software as long as you dont open EXE. files, YOU ARE WRONG! 2 were from S&F members. I emailed them that the virus is sending itself out to everyone in their address book, and doing so without them even knowing it.
I suspect the other e-mails were from S&F members also but I didnt recognize the senders names so I'm not certain.
IF YOU DONT HAVE AN ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM, GET ONE!
NORTON OR MACAFEE are great.
Several other S&F members have told me they have been sent viruses from S&F members recently so its not just me. Its being passed around between us. Even people you dont know could give it to you indirectly by conversing with someone you converse with.
Thanks,
AZH
Thanks, I’m doing mine right now.

I have been updating muine constantly, has cought several already, someone is been busy creating them and spreading them! I wouldn't even go on the net without it!!!!!
as for those that have it sending right out of your address books, I had one do that a while back when I first got my new puter, like a year and a half ago, then I got an email explaining how to stop that from happening, has worked for me, it stopped them from being sent!
Open up your address book, go to new entry, or however your is set up, add name, for the name, type in
!000, (exclamation mark and 3 zeros)that will make it the first on your address book list, then for the address, type
WORM ALERT... What this will do is, when the virus tries to copy and send itself to all in your address book, it will create an error message and won't be able to send the mail, because 'worm alert' is not a valid address, so no mail will be sent out! That will tell you that a virus is present and trying to send itself out via your system! This happened to me once already, so it does work... I have since gotten the latest and greatest Mcfee setup, with Firewall isnce I have cable and am logged on all the time... works great!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck, hope this helps....

Someone on this board has a virus and is spreading it around. I just got another e-mail from an S&F member. A VIRUS was attached. Thats 5 today. I hope everyone reads this post and does something about this. The bad thing is, a lot of people who dont have anti-virus programs have no idea they are infected and truly believe they arent. They wont do anything because they have no idea they have a problem. Just wait till their system crashes. Oh, and Boaterbum, great idea. Everyone should do that. I have 2 separate e-mail accounts and the addresses are in my address book. This serves the same purpose.
Regards to all,

I am not the most computer literate and dont understand the virus thing. The computer I am on was built by a company that supplied a national corportation needs. How do I tell if I have a anti-virus program? I have been deleting anything I dont know its origin. Am I safe? thanks Rick

Hey rick your best bet is to get some software to help out. A few of these new ones we are seeing are tricky to detect....

DELAWARE RICK,
go to find files or folder and type in virus protection or macafee and it should show you
skip
Some of the newer Worm viruses can change the name of the sender to a fake name so it's hard to tell where it came from. In Outlook Express, click the mesage line to preview it. The virus protection will stop the attachment from auto-executing and pop up an alert window. Tell it to block or delete the file. Now, right click the message line and click PROPERTIES. Select the "Details" tab. You should see a list of message headers. this is the list of computer instructions that routes the message. Look through it, you may find a line marked as "return-path=" that will show whose computer sent the virus, even if the "from" address has been forged by the virus. That way, you may be able to alert the victim of their infection.
Make sure your virus protection is updated before you try it...

in case ya'll didn't see this the first time around, I'll post it again.
AVG offers a FREE antivirus program that I have been using on several different OS's for a couple of years. THey offer free updates as well. The GUI is extremely easy to use & setup, it will also do automatic updates as well as scheduled nightly scans. I have used it on 98, ME, 2000, 2000 server & 2000 advanced server. It will scan all incoming AND outgoing email as well as downloads. I have yet to get a virus on any of my systems since using it. And for those that aren't aware, both McAfee & Norton retail versions eat up alot of system resources while running, just an FYI. It can be found at :
www.grisoft.com
(the only thing to change is the default update download site, change it to www.grisoft.cz , it downloads much quicker)

I'll check out that site ya sent, thanks...... What the hell, can't have too much protection, right?!?!?! lol
As for the resources, thats why i maxed out my computer with 512Mb RAM, should be able to keep up with whatever I run! lol...
As for people that don't know they have a virus, thats how some are designed, they won't crash for a specified amount of time, just hide there till it is spread like the damn Plague!!! Then POOF, it opens up a world of hell on thousands of computers!!!!!!!!!!!! Get a some protection for your computers, gets expensive when ya start crashing the damn thing and have to pay to fix it!!!!!!
the protection doesn't include putting a condom over the mouse!!!!!!!!!!!! hahaha

Pyro, clicking the message line is all it takes to infect your computor. All I did was click the message line to preview and bam! Norton kicked in. I didnt open the attachment. When I deleted it, I went to my deleted e-mail folder to clear it. The message was the first one which means it is highlighted...bam...Norton kicked in again. Many viruses can be attached to an email with out an attachment.
Also, the reason I know the virus came from board members was that 2 had "@Screamandfly" in the address bar. Others had derivatives of board members names with other characters added in.
Anyway, I appreciate your input on this and hope everyone gets there machines protected.

AZH

WharfRat, thanks for the tip. Downloaded the AGV software and it worked great. Found 6 files with the Nimda virus. Sorry to anybody that's gotten anything from me....I know Q-Shot got the dreaded blank e-mail.
I recommend the software. Easy to download and install and ran through my Laptop's 20GB hard drive in about 25 minutes.
I changed the automatic download to the .cz url as recommended and now it's running in the background.
Thanks a bunch!

Actually, it sounds like your computer was just running the defragmenter program, thats where the Hard drive 'reorganizes' its' files, so to take up less space on the disk, run more efficiently... I am not sure though, hard to say without seeing it myself... Good luck to all, I am relitively safe, knock-on screen, and clean so far!!!!!:D
I had one of them Worm viruses in mine, I downloaded AVG and it found 20 files that were infected, The Worm is dead:D

I imagine you could run the AVG & Norton at the same time, however, I don't recommend it. Norton (& McAfee) both use alot of memory & some processor speed. THis is because they are very "busy" programs that run in the background. AVG only rund when sending/rec'ing email or when you are downloading. I have a licensed copy of McAfee that I never use, just my preference.
(in case ya'll are wondering, I'm a A+ Certified Technician & have also graduated from Microsoft's 2000 & 2000 advanced server course)
but........I like boats more !!!!!!

Like I said Boater, AVG is my preference, I currently have 2000 Advanced Server running on my personal machine, & 2 other systems running 2000Pro, prior to that I have run 98 & ME with the AVG & never a virus or problem, but here is a very good scenario, the first time I installed AVG on my windows ME machine, it found a virus that McAfee never did.....................
(can just imagine how good their licensed version is....)
But, just my opinion....................................

Yes Yes
I am a huge Fan now!
It really seems to work well and doesnt bog down or take over my computer like norton or Mcafee. Plus AVG found 2 worms that Mcafee didnt......... took 24 min to scan two 60 GB hard drives..> SWEET Stuff!

Been getting 6 too 15 a day for over a month. I don't know about that Free AV program but Norton has served me well for seven years and still does. One thing some may not know is, Norton puts up the updates for "Live Update" once a week on Wednesday's. You can check and get daily updates with their "Intelligent Updater". Please read all the info before downloading!
