what's a merc 1100ss?

It's a 110 HP inline 6 made in 1966 with SS ignition (1st Capacitive discharge ignition Merc ever made).

It was also made in 1967 too. Mercury made a 95 hp and 110 hp pair of " screaming silos" both of those years before upping the ante to 125 hp in 1968.
