Explain what a pair of 630"s look like and I'll see if I have some around here.:D

You are wishing for a lot ... I'd like to find just one ... or even a lower unit to complete the one I have.

I do not know of any collectors that have 2, and only 3 or 4 collectors that have one.

This is odd because there were supposed to be 500 of them according to the people who actually worked at the factory in the midwest AND the people who raced them for the factory in the southweast.

On the flip side - almost every Merc Mark75H is accounted for - enough for 50 serialize motors and almost that many more prototypes and assembled from spare parts.

Thanks Mark 75H...you are quick on those links.:)
Was this the same engine as I described in post 5 of the 63 Scott ad thread? Did it have vertical trim?

Mark75H
04-24-2007, 07:12 AM
No, not the same motors.

Those are 75hp "Customs"

Vertical lift was an option on Customs, but not 630's

Another link: http://forums.screamandfly.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71194 5 630's on one boat

Sam,
you may want to check out this ad on ebay for a 75.2 hp McCulloch- standard fishing motor but a lot of nice shots. Nice red block.
I wish the guy had the prop on right, if that prop was even designed for the engine.

So a buddy sent me this add for a McCulloch 630 for sale....sent it to the Dick and never heard back......how much is too much?

There is extra paint on it that did not come from the factory; the lower unit was originally white like the rest of the motor below the powerhead, the white has some kind of funky pin-striping that does not belong.

The carbs are not factory original; there is some kind of extension on the fronts and the original spray shields are missing.

The Merc OPC type steering bar is funky, too. McCullochs usually had their steering connected at the front like a pleasure motor; when the used a steering bar it was a much simpler bar that just attached to a boss at the back of the motor.

close up views show more alterations. The ignition coil is not original, nor mounted in the original position. As I thought earlier, the spray shields are missing and something weird is attached to the front of the carbs. The 630's had trouble with the distributor drive belt coming off, so there were little guides tack welded to the pulley. Only the bottom belt guide seems to be present (they are frail and break off easily if abused, this guy may have never noticed). If I was "restoring" an old motor I would certainly use hose clamps where hose clamps belong and not wire ties ... plastic wire ties are not period correct (they did not become common until about 7 or 8 years after the 630 went out of production).

The thing at the far bottom left of the top pic and middle far right of the second picture is the sawhorse queen ignition switch. It is mounted in one of the front steering connections. Convenient, but distracting. The home made barn door hinged steering bar is also distracting. It appears to extend too far forward to work correctly anyway. It should be removed.

That looks like an original Litton prop on it ... lots of "S" shape on the trailing edge. The grey part of the lower unit has 1 tooth off ratio gears with a reduced diameter for the tooth size & pitch, making them heavy duty. The white section above it is where the quick change ratio gears are.

A $12,000 or even $6,000, a McCulloch 630 or 590 would have to have all 5 or 10 sets of quick change gears and several original Litton props along with the original bill of sale. If it has all these, it sure would be nice to see them, but it is far from "mint" or "restored".

Sam got more out from that Pix because he looks real hard. Not hard nuff to find a motor thats been in his town and just went to the scrapper. Cause he don't check the scrappers.:nonod:

On this side of ye big water scrappers only take, they don't give. They won't even let you look ... I think they are afraid you will see stuff your neighbor's kids sold them.

...do you guys know Dan? Or is this just old news I just found out about

Mark75H
01-24-2009, 08:38 AM
Its news to me.

The first one is even less of a 630. The only 630 parts I see above the tower there are the bowls on the bottoms of the carbs and the carb fuel block ... fully standard 75.2 hp fishing powerhead. The second one is hard to make out. Its a different motor, could be a 630 block with rotor, but the starter looks std and so does the single spray shield.

Any chance of learning who owns this or where?

The prop is one of the originals made by Litton.

The fuel stuff is something modern added later.

Local racer Floyd Murton raced twin 590/630s in the early 60's on a Kober Kat. Blew it over in 70 ft. of water, took two weeks to find amoung the trees. He raced a lot of stuff, but left town and took all of it with him I guess about '64 or '65. He moved to Fayetteville, AR. and never heard of him again. May be a stash somewhere in that area.

Yeah, thats the one from post 21. The lister is the niece of the owner and info is near impossible to get other than the outrageous asking price.

yea thats the engine, I talked to Dan for 2hrs, he is sending me pics -snail mail- and the ones posted here he sent on his phone. He told me the whole story....and he says he has several gear sets also. I may have to go there and take my own pics, He did say it was a 590 when he purchaced it and he converted it to a 630.

The difference is the stroke of the crank and possibly milling the block to match, so converting would just involve installing a standard crank and block from a 75 hp fishing motor reported to 630 specs, at most.

If you talk to him again or go in person, check the serial numbers on both of them or better yet, take a pics of the plates. More info about the exact ratios of the gear sets would be great too. The factory info is a little sketchy.

If he still has the 590 crank and is willing to part with it, that would be awesome
