Can someone verify the dimension from the top flange surface area to the tip of the shaft on a speedmaster or super speed? I'm having my driveshaft shortened and want to make sure I have correct measurement. Or if anyone knows how exactly much to take out. I have a 5/8" gearcase adapter plate. Thanks Scott

The question didn't make a whole lot of sense ... but you must have meant you were having your tower shortened (but that's not what you typed).
Speedmasters, Super Speedmasters and Type VI and IV's are different animals and you included all of them as if there was only one measurement. The earlier Speedmaster types are probably not approproate just the same.
Why not just get the parts you intend to use and measure yourself to make sure no one makes a mistake in measuring, writing and typing? :)

I dont want to buy a speedmaster that I'll never use just to measure it. I'm not sure how else to describe what I'm doing. Going from a 15 to a 12 and having my driveshaft stortened in a sportmaster.

Scott I just had to run by the house to pick something up for work and was able to measure mine. my sportmaster is off the boat, but still assembled. I measured from the top of the waterpump housing to the tip of the driveshaft. I pulled off the thick rubber o-ring that rides on top of the housing. it's 12 7/16"
I run a 5/8" adaptor plate
if your not 100% sure where I measured it from call me at 281-235-9247

Generally speaking, there's 5" difference between a 15" mid and a 12" mid, plus/minus any adapters or mods.
Wanna do it the easy/foolproof way? Mount the powerhead on the mid, WITH WHATEVER TUNER PLATE YOU'RE GONNA USE ON THE CHAMP, then shove the gearcase in it, and measure the gap. That'll give you the exact measurement.
There are some differences in the plates at the top and I've gotta agree with Sam................... there's not really enough information to give you an exact answer.
I am confused, the way I read this, is he has a 15" mid and wants to cut a driveshaft for a SSM that has been adapted with a 5/8 plate to a 15 ( actually 18 5/8 mid )....... or I am missing something.

Rob, it was confusing to me also. From the "don't want to buy a Speedmaster that I'll never use" comment, I thought he meant that he runs a Sporty and was going from a 15 to a champ and wanted to shorten the Sporty shaft to use it. Of course that takes an adapter. Any time there's adapting involved, I think a trial fit makes it idiot proof, and the way it seems I always have to do things twice, idiot proof is what I'm after.;)
Since we don't know what 12" he's gonna use, and with what on top, there're too many variables for ME to want to spit out a number. I've got the IV Speedmaster from my yellow boat laying here.

About the how I described it. My boat had a 15" Mid and a 15" Sportmaster. I'm putting a 12" mid on my boat that has a 1/4" tuna plate, hydraulic up/down, in/out but no studs and I'll be using a 5/8 gearcase adapter plate to match my sportmaster to this 12" mid. I'm shortening the shaft in the sportmaster so it will be right length.
Raceman-Great idea but my sportmaster is taken apart and drive shaft sent to fabricator. Shoulda done that first.
I think I've got it figured out. Thanks Scott

The distance from the flange face to the tip of the drive shaft on a #4 ssm that goes on a 12" mid is 13 5/8 " Steve

That is exactly what I needed.
