i have heard of mota builders that retard the timing on thier motas to keep the rpms down. has anyone else heard of this? why im askin is that the 245 i recently purchased was supposedly rebuilt and only had about 10 hours on it. i am a little disappointed in its performance so im checkin things out. what ive found is that the timing has been set to about (and im guessing here) 20* plus or minus a degree. im wondering about how many more rpms i can expect to get outta this thing when i set it to the recommended 25*. currently its running about 6200-6400 depending on air temp. i also dont want to tear the thing up. im thinkin that the builder set this timing back to keep the rpms down to help prevent failure. ive put about 6 hours on it and the guy i bought it from said it had about 10 on it. reckon i can set this timing back to 25* and let this dawg hunt?

Timing is set depending on the compression and octain of fuel used ,
I would check the compression # s first , that might give you an indication why it was backed off , or it was just backed off for break in ;)

Retarted timing will KILL a 2 strokes power, PERIOD...I've experimented with my Drag Race engine timing from 25* all the way up to 31* and find that the high timing will help the botom end but hurt on the top side...Also high timing with big compression numbers plays havoc on starter bendixs and thin modified flywheel starter rings... I'd run timing no higher on recreational motors than 25*.......

Good luck,
