I have one of these battery switches with 2 batteries in the boat

On
Off
1
2
Both
Can you safely switch this while engine is running?
I did it one time...started it with 1 and switched to 2 when 2 did not have enough juice to start engine.
No problems, but want to know if it's something I should avoid.

not to sure about the 5 position switch..

but some of the better qwality 4 position rotary switches are a MBB (make before break) type & yes these can safely be turned clockwise to select whatever battery you desire whilst motor is running. with the exeption of the off position.

if your not sure what type of switch you possess then it is a better idea not to switch whilst motor is running as damadge to the charging system ie:rectifier/regulator is gaurenteed.

as long as it meets ABYC its a make before brake style... some older ones arenot... i have personally never had a problem switching from 1 to another or all in the past with my perko switch... other brands though not really sure as i personally have only installed them for others and have limmited usage over time with them on my own stuff...

You can get away with it yes, but its not a good idea. As already stated, it is not good for the charging system.
