Just thinking about what I would eventually repower the 13' Bullet with.
Currently running a 1986 inline 4 cyl Merc 75hp.
Runs great but is a little tall and heavy until I can find a 15" mid and lower.

From digging around S&F it looks like the old 75 Stingers would have been perfect for this boat.

Are there any newer engines in this hp range that can compare with the weight/hp ratio of the old Stingers or inline Mercs?

In a nutshell, NO. Best thing I found was a 90 Mercury classic carbed 2 stroke. You might be able to still get one. There's the 90 Etec, but from what i have seen it's a little doggy for a 90. The Yamaha 90 carbed motors are about the same as the Etecs, little weak for a 90 but are fairly light and theres aftermarket hi-po parts for them. Not sure if you can still get them anymore though. There isn't much out there for the 90hp and down class of motors for smaller fast boats. Contact fast fred and get one of those beats he puts together and call it a day IMO

Any idea on the weight of the 90 Yamis vs. my inline 4 Merc?

I gotta disagree about the 90 etec being doggy, from all the tests I've seen and what I've heard from people who have one they are far better then the merc. at least in comparison to the optimax 90.

If money were no issue, I would only have E-Tecs on my small boats. We've sold many E-Tecs (along with Mercs, and Yamis) and they are strong, light, and have a great warranty. Second choice would be the Yamaha 90hp. The E-Tecs have been running well with very few issues.

Well of course you'd disagree lol Seriously my boat is 5 mph faster than a guy with the same setup on the same hull with a 90 Etec. The Etec 90's seem to put out the same power as the 90 carbed yammys which never seemed to be as strong as the old v4 omc's or 90 classic Mercs. Not a brand bash, just the truth. They might be better on gas, quieter and have less emissions but they don't perform like the V4's and 90 Mercs. The pig heavy 90 merc Opti's will even beat them saddled with 50 extra pounds. Like i said, there really isn't anything out there for the smaller 90hp and under class of high performance boats. This includes anything Mercury has out too, not just BRp and Yam.

back in the late 80's early 90's there was a class that ran 75 stingers on
13' boats. I ran a Bullet with a Stinger and Sharkey Ran his now famous 13' Bullet. The boats had great excelleration and performance. 15" mid and less weight. It was a great package. Bullets don't like to much weight hanging off them and they don't need any set back. I owned 3 Bullets over my lifetime and am looking for a used one now to put together for my son.

Sounds like I'll have to stick to 20-30 year old motors :-)

Anyone know the weight of the inline 4 Merc 75 20"?

I think even the 2 stroke 90hp Yami would be too heavy for the bullet.

If I wanted a new engine for my Voo Doo:

option 1 = Fast Fred
option 2 = late model 60 HP Merc

Brian Scherrif (sp?) won races with the late model 60 Merc. It is relatively light, and has power trim. The rev limiter can be removed from at least some models. It has 1.64 gears so there are a lot of prop options.

The 70 Yamaha fishing motor can work, but is harder to prop for a small boat.

Of course a 70 HP two cylinder Nissan/Tohatsu is hard to beat.

We have most of the models and raced against the others.
Based on all short shaft small foot motors being well tuned and with proper set-up here is the list.
1- original omc sand cast 56 block with SST 60 sleeves
2- foam cast block OMC 56 as above
3- fast fred mod 70 yamaha
4 - stinger, yamaha stock 70 CES or 60 cu. in. Mercury

do you know how much an old Stinger (15'') weighs?

198 lb for a short shaft Stinger

Dave- What year range is the 'late model 60 hp Merc'? I wonder if the lower weight of the 60hp motor would be enough to get me more top end than my 75 hp inline 4 Merc.

David

Merc 60

The 'new' engine came out in 1991 at 51.8 cubes, 217 lb
1992 claimed weight down to 207 lb
1998 up to 59 cubes, 219 lb
2005 was the last year in the brochures

I conceptually like this engine because it is relatively new, has power trim and oil injection, and with 1.64 gears, there are a lot of prop options.

At least part way through there is a rev limiter. Maybe all years had it. The rev limiter might be harder to defeat on newer engines.

The 'old' 60 was 1/2 an inline 6, and I don't think that engine was as strong.

Hounddog posted once that the 'new' 60 wasn't as fast as some of the other options, but could win races by accelerating harder from the start and out of turns.

I think the 59 cube Merc 60 would be my best option because I usually run my Voo Doo with my wife in the boat. Of course my old Nissan is an even better option as I already own it.

Seriously, the 70 Nissan/Tohatsu might be the bargain of the bunch. Per NADA these are almost free. Put on a 23 SRX or cleaver and have fun.

would all of these suggested motors be acceptible uses of power for a mini voodoo? im looking to repower mine since the old merc 50 thats on it is toast.

A Stinger, with 3, 2lt Merc bullets:eek:

a Mod50 FT would run with any thing on the list, big bucks, a Super Mod56
would be vary hard to get around, not many of them out thare,
a 56 OMC or a 49 on a 15" mid, with finger ports, a Nitro with a cone, put down more"GET IT" than any thing new you could buy, but for a 70ces, got to do some work to the 70ces before it will Scream.

bdot, all of these motors are too large for the mini voo doo. You do not have enough boat. My son practises with a mini voo doo 30 yamaha with a small 18 pitch chopper. He can get close to 50 mph out of it. The boat is close to blowing over. He says it sharpness his boat feel. The 22 inch transom is perfect for a short shaft 50 Yamaha. That would give you all the power you need. A key with the mini is boat balance. Use a small battery in the stern and move the gas tank under the nose. A Mercury tank fits tightly. We also run ours with the seat out.

And if ya know how, you can make it trim with an intergral 3 ram system, right Fred ;)

Scott and Outlaw,

I'm in the same boat (literally). I tried the 15" Stinger (Evinrude version), and it seems this boat can handle more power on the lake but no more weight on the transom. I'm thinking about newer four stroke jet ski power and a home baked surface drive.
