hoisting an outboard

I need to lift an I-6 Merc off the transom. My manual says to thread an eye bolt on to the crankshaft but the photo in the book shows a tool threaded into the flywheel (like the tool that you use to remove the flywheel)

What's the right way to do it? - I'm talking about the whole engine not just the powerhead.

Use the mercury tool, there are some aftermarket versions as well. Screws into the flywheel and works on all the motors. Lifts the motor straight up.

I highly recommend the JSRE combination flywheel puller and lifting eye. I just finished installing my Merc onto the transom and it worked great!! It is made very well.
