About to embark on another rebuild. Curious to know what everyone's opinion is on bearing replacement.

Have never replaced any of the bearings after about 50+ hours of WOT work in the 6.5 - 7K rev range.

Are there bearings that are mandatory to replace and others that only need inspection?

Noticed on another engine one of the centre main's had some pitting on the rollers as well as the crank - cleaned 80% of the marks out of the crank with a light rub with 800 wet & dry. Is this anything to be concerned about

You did OK on the crank. If you can't feel any roughness. I always replace the rod bearings. ALWAYS. The wrist pin bearings I inspect if OK I reuse them. The main bearings should have no slop or signs of rust or pitting of any kind. If so replace. Check the bearing locating pins that they are not pushed in and the block is nice and round where the bearings are.

I had my friend rebuild my 140 Looper and told me their is a special alignment tool to set the seats and bearings in straight. (He's been an OMC Mastertech for the past 20 years) One of the reasons for the rebuild was from not using the tool. Bearings that came out of it were wasted. Hope this helps.

hey just some input on the bearing issue, replace all ,i,ve seen to many good good cranks go to waste for the sake of a few dollars try a C3 clearance bearing on the bottom of crank they are rated for higher RPM than a standard roller bearing IE..6305C3... BE SURE TO REPLACE ROD BOLTS FOR SAFETY SAKE
just my two cents worth good luck
