Ghost,
I've got a D50 (twin to the D40) and love it. Greg took the pic's from the Miami Int'l boat show with one. Currently looking for a faster lens.

Check out Ebay for some good deals. I bought a new package deal loaded to the gills with stuff for $830 shipped.

Standard & Zoom lense (nikor)
1 gig memory
soft case
cleaning kit
tri pod
extra battery
two filters - cheap but better than nothing
......

peace,
Jamie

either one will be great. if you can spring for a little more [say under 1000] get either one at this level eg d80 or canon xxx. i when for nikon only because i had lens already. you may even consider the olympus slr.

look in a camera mag, in the adds, and see what cameras have lens from sigma, tamron ...... that way your not tied to the manufacures lens. there very good but the cost!!!!

George I would go with the Canon Rebel XTi for sure over the D50... and I think the Canon is cheaper as well. If your talkin the Regular Canon Rebel compared to the D50 its pretty equal. The Canon Rebel XTi and the new Nikon D40x are very similar I would go with one of these two.

I recently purchased a Canon EOS 30D a few months back and I'm glad I went with Canon I love this Camera!

haha Greg is gonna love that line!! I know he loves his Nikons! haha

But in all seriousness there both good camera's Can't go wrong with either... and Like Greg said in another thread the Lens you use is more important then the body.

check it out:

D40x Body only on B&H is $729

ok....so i bougt the D-40 and my girlfriend loves it so far....we have only taken some BS shots of things in the house and family at birthday parties...i havent had time to post any shots yet....

buuuutttt...i am thinking bigger lens...i know the boating season is approaching and i want to be able to take kick azz pics at tanner...my question is for Greg and any others in the know....what is a reasonable step up lens from the kit lens and not neccesarily just one step up...something with some capability as well as the next step.......

i know the D-40 need AF lenses that the motor is in the lens....i dont want to spend a ton of money but want a quality lens...i have seen some talk about Vibration Reduction lenses and is it worth it....especially since i will be taking pics on the boat and stuff...

I recommend that you start off with the new Nikon 55-200 AF-S VR. It's new, small, light, and costs only about $250. You can't lose with it, and it has an image stabilizer too. It's the best deal out there right now.

i did some searching and thats what i was thinking was the next size up...i wasnt sure if the image stabilizer was a good thing or not...i think i will order one up....any place you reccomend for the best deal...

My preference is B&H Photo/Video (http://www.bhphotovideo.com) or BuyDig (http://www.buydig.com) - both have great prices and are very reputable. You absolutely cannot go wrong with the 55-200 VR.

And if you have to look for best deal you probably can't afford it anyway.

Having a bad day AL? Why make such a statement?

You don't need 10+ megapixels for most applications. 6 is more than enough :)

Those lenses are fine - just don't use them in low light. For daytime action, they work well. :)
