I purchased a BBC/Berkeley 12JG driven 18' Placecraft this past January.
It has a power trim on the snorkel.
Today was the first day to run it. It seems to acquire quit a bit of bilge water.
For some reason, there is a lot of spray hitting the back of the tunnel ram, maybe its spray from have the nozel trimmed all the way down and some water is pissing out the little gap.
The reverse bucket cable seal was tight and looks good. The cable does not slide in the seal.
Not sure about the steering seal.
Not sure of the packing adjustment...
Frankly, I don't know **** about jet drives. Always had cruiser or houseboat.
Any suggestions be appreciated...

Check your packing gland on the pump shaft, you may need to adjust it. Check all your hose connections, you may have one loose from winterizing at some point. Check the pump suction housing over real close, some develope cracks in them, from overcharging the intake. Are you running a flywheel cover? flywheels will zing water everywhere. Good luck

Check the engine for petcocks as well. Spelling?? Any way you can put water in the bottom while on the trailer to see if there is a leak around the pump. I wouldn't laugh about that. I woun't tell you the builder, but before the jet was deliverd they put the hose into the bilge to see if she dripped. Well she dripped a bunch and then got a bunch of rtv to stop it. Yup brand new boat from a top builder.

I had the same problem. Where is this water coming from. I checked this,:( I checked that. I tighten hoses. So I jump into the lake to look around the pump & tramsom. Watching the waves hit the transom. :eek:BINGO:eek: Jumped back in the boat & pulled off one of the bilge pump hose:eek: As the waves hit the transom, water was coming back through the 2 bilge pump hoses.
I need to find a check valve or something. I could try to put longer hoses in with like a loop in the hose:confused: A one way valve would be a cleaner look.
Hope you can solve your problem.

Thanks EVERYONE !
I'll check these out.
The suction piece looks like a major piece of the pump, is it common to crack that??
The packing- appears that either the pump or the motor must be removed to replace that...
The engine mounts are a "3 point" configuration, with the front mounts on the stringers and the rear connected to the jet with a cast aluminum bell housing. How would one get to the packing and associated parts, such as #19, #23, #25 and #27?
reason am asking, it looks to me that something big is going to have to come out to make this repair, if indeed, it is the packing...
Again, THANKS for the info!

I'll post a picture of the rear engine mount, etc tomorrow.
Any help is certainly appreciated!

I finally had a chance to add water to my bilge in an effort to find my water leaks.
The only leak found was around the bowl where it meets up to the adapter. There was a black silicone as the only sealer around this area. Is that the way it is supposed to be? or is there supposed to be an O-Ring, or something, in there? There wasn't one, just the black silicone, which had a little leak.
That was the only leak I found. Added water to the bilge only to the Berkley drive shaft.
I started poking around there where the silicone was added and the more poking the more volume of water came out. Didn't take much poking to get the water flowing.
So, removed the silicone from the bowl perimeter, cleaned the area with air wire brush and am now ready to re-seal.
I need to know what is the "RIGHT" sealer to use here. Can anyone offer some advice on this?
Thanks!

Clean the area real well then mask of with fine line painters tape, just out side of where you want the silicone to be. Then run an extra strip of masking tape around the out side of that to keep the mess to a minimum. apply a bead of silicone around the bowl, and run your finger around the bowl to smooth out the silicone, and push it in to any voids. Once thats completed, pull off the masking tape, then the fine line, before the silicone cures. This leaves a nice looking seal job that will last years.

Wouldnt hurt to check the frost plugs, mine were rusted threw. Yes I said rust, seems someone had replaced the engine with one from a car without brass plugs.

Seems pretty basic, but nobody has mentioned it. This is what I got for $500.

One of the exhaust hoses was not clamped properly. Boat sank!!!! Boat sat outside for a year and a half after because owner was pissed.
It's the boat in my avatar. Nice boat.
