I have a 94 mod 200 motor that i'm wanting to get up closer to around 260hp
Now i have read that the pro max model puts out around 245hp even though it's only rated at 225 so was wondering what is needed to get to this level
I am also wondering what mods can be done to the 2.5 steel bore block for maximum performance, like is there different heads, cranks etc etc that can be used similar to that of the 3.0 225 series
Any info or links to relevant information much appreciated

Do a search
"2.5 performance" and read what comes up you'll learn a lot.
If the engine is healthy - mill the heads is the best bang for the buck.
Good luck

i've done fair bit of searching and know differences between 200 and 260'etc but can't seem to find out EXACTLY what was different in the pro max
as for all out performance i'm starting to get an idea of what can be done here after looking at simons site along with mad efi's
here is the short version from what I understand. John Marles can make a steel sleeve 2.5 200 put out well over 300hp, and I believe at one time he posted a port map somewhere on here for a 340hp. It can be done, it is a matter of how much you want to spend.
IMHO, you will spend less buying a 260 powerhead than you will trying to bring a 200 up to that HP. If you are on a budget (like most of us) and the 260 does not sound like the way to go, then likely making the 200hp run like a 260 will not be either.
However, there are some things you can do and there are several good threads on here about it. the most cost effective and best result will be cutting your heads down to 34cc. that will give you around 145psi comp., and allow you to still run pump gas (93 octane). reeds, depending on what you already have will help too.
Those are bolt ons, and will give you some seat of the pants improvement you will feel. you can lighten the rods, pistons, port the motor...etc, but you are talking some bigger dollars that at some point get you closer to the 260 or carbed 245 powerhead price. just my $.02
BTW, welcome to S&F.

OH, one more thing, speed is not only about HP... setup, the right prop, and seat time will probably get you as much, if not more, than some of the mods we are talking about.
here are a couple threads I saved when I was going through the same thought process:

I've built several Pro Max motors for folks on this board ( Tony Brucato, Russ Benton,{ RB in NM}, Chris Justice, {Half Fast}, and I'm building one now for Tim Stepp ) they've been VERY pleased with the power, longevity , and durability of the engines, I've been told it sure feels good to beat up on the "fast" guys at the lake and have them "swallow thier cud" when you pull off the cowling and there sits a steel sleeved Pro Max Motor....:D
Contact these guys for detales on thier JSRE Pro Max type steel sleeve motor experiance......
Good luck,

Hey Fish, lot of good info there thanks heaps, much appreciated
Will have to get in contact with John and get some pistons and rods through him for this project that's for sure
I didn't think 330hp would be possible but after reading those threads my minds a turnin
Jay - In the short time i have been member here i already have LOT of respect for you and your company, with so many people talking you and your company up you will definately be getting a call from me regarding some products
Ohhh and reason i want to do 200 is cause it's a challenge, plus i already have the motor and was going to go forged internals anyway
This motor will be getting used in racing circuit 99% of time, other 1% is testing :)
you got it man, good luck and keep us posted how your project is coming.

With an SVS and race gas I make way over 330 HP with steel sleeve ProMax blocks. Thats All I like to run. The 330 HP is the carb venison.

Any reason for only steel sleeved blocks?
Friend has a 175 block and we're wondering if this to could be modded in same way
Ohhh and John, you have PM bud :D
Yes, they can be bored and modified and ported at will. They are cheep to replace. They are cheep to re-sleeve. And there is nothing funnier than pulling off the cowl to show the guy with the drag motor you just beat that your running a carbed 200 HP black block.

I have the same engine....what would it cost to modify the heads for added compression?
Are these worth anything? (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/High-Compression-Head-Gaskets-Mercury-2-5-liter_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ50439QQihZ001QQitemZ110054553550QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V)

Compression increase is THE BIGGEST BANG for the BUCK , we successfully cut hundreds of heads a year. To cut to a top pump gas compression ( 140/145 lbs cranking compression at sea level ) is $150.00 USD + freight. AS always the customer gets 1 free trip back for zeroing in on the exact compression ( recut freight to and from JSRE is at customers expence )
Good luck,

thanks Jay
I will take my current compression to get an idea of where I am at. Then report back to you and get this thing rolling while weather is cold. Right now, I do NOT like my low end power...we mostly ski

David,
The BIGGEST noticable increase in power on most compression increases is the torque and power gained on the bottom and mid range, exactly where a ski boat needs that enhancement to improve lackluster performance due to the load that it put on it pulling a skier up.....

Yes... I think so. This is my first V6 and very please so far. Cooling is a question though. Thermostats did not open when at lake last weekend. I let idle on trailer and felt cylinders and heads...warm, but not hot. Since it wasn't overheating, I back off trailer and ran it for awhile. Air temp was about 47 and so was water. I think water was being excessively dumped in exhaust and really hurting low end. I put cooling system back to stock with stats and poppet, but don't have a good feeling about it yet. Rpm was 6700. My engine has no serial numbers on it whatsoever. Boat came with a 2.4 in 1989. Previous owner says powerhead is a steel sleeve 2.5 from 1995 (with carbs), so I assume it was retrofitted to rest of engine with CLE gearcase.

Forgot to mention water pressure is almost nothing at idle and about 25-30 at full throttle.

You warm bloods don't like those temps,
glad to hear you got things running. Ya if you have time do a leak down and compression test.
I want to find out what a reasonable leak down rate is with a 2 stroke so I'll post it now. But leak down % is an accurate way to measure how well the rings are sealing
