Bigobass1 has got me thinking. He's got a 2003 BRP/Johnson DFI (johnson called them Ficht when they were in business) for sale on Ebay.

I'm wondering if it would be worth pulling my low hour like new 150 BRP Johnson carb off the old ladies tubing boat and installing a BRP upgraded Ficht new/old stock motor and selling the carb motor? I know over the course of several years I'd make the money back in fuel savings, but what about the later Ficht motors?

Thoughts on the reliability of the later DFI motors?

I have heard nothing bad about the BRP motors. You'd burn less gas, get easier starting, and have more low end torque.

Once BRP took over the quality control went way up. Not like when OMC was filing for bankrupcy and they threw anything on an engine they had laying around. Those were good engines i wouldnt think twice about buying one.

If your carb motor is one with the old style cowl, it is 40+ pounds lighter than the injected motor.

From what I can find about the FICHT, they say they are junk. Do a search and look for your self. And a smale fortune to fix, a new power head is needed.

That year motor was a good year. The failures occurred in the early OMC models. That is a BRP motor completely made by BRP. It will serve you well.

Yes, I need a 25" motor. The 18' boat I use for tube towing is extra deep and wide, 25" transom. It's like a big 12 person hot tub!
