i just purchased a virage and was wondering what engine to go with-cannot afford anything hi dollar-i was thinking about either a bridgeport, building a modified 2.5/200 hp,modded 2.4/200 hp or a 3 litre- any suggestions???? thanks

2.5 promax i believe pushedmyuncles 92 witha 28chopper heusedto run 2.4's also.at88 to 89mph
Bridgeport would be cheap and fast. These guys seem to get as much coin for a healthy 2.5 200 powerhead than a healthy BP. I know one motor is all-around better, but without modifying anything, I'd do the BP all over again any day.

Finding a nice clean reliable bridgeport is not easy.
The 2.5 200 is more user friendly. And theyres plenty of room for mods in the future.

2.5 many more options:D
Yes, more options, of course. Options cost money. I was just talking in stock form. If you can find a healthy rebuilt BP, you'll have 240 hp at 7000 rpm, all day long, on 89 pump gas.
A 225 Promax is said to be as strong as a BP, but then there's the $$$ factor...

bp blow up to much for me:eek: in the long run a 2.5 will out last a bp all day at 7,000:D
I'll keep the knuckles on my crossed fingers knocking on wood then... :D

so the 3 liter is out of the question??!! i guess so, i have a line on the 2.5, i was going to do the usual mods, wisecos, clean up the exhaust chest, mild port and shave the heads, and reeds, am i still better off w/ the 2.5 w/ these mods, will it outrun the bp?? how fast will this package run??? what wheel??

You should just buy a 260, Better than doin all that work to a stock 200.

200's last longer... and are easy to find and build...

Why not just buy a brand new leftover 280?
I was assuming that budget was an issue here.
I would also like a 260. :D

it definetely needs to be reasonably priced, i need to get some help in either castings or how to identify the parts, i used to work on a lot of mercury product( was factory certified), i have an opportunity to pick through my own parts at a marine wholesaler, which has 2.5 blocks, cranks and everything else, to build the engine, most of the parts are in useable condition, so it shouldn't be a problem, throught my business( marine diesel engine repair), so i need to figure out what parts to select for a 2.5 200, there is 2.4 parts mixed in w/ various other brands, i need to be able to quickly identify cranks, exhaust plates and rods, also i know the ignition systems are interchangeable, so i will use either a 9 or 16 amp charge system- basically the 2.4 system- what about carbs- i was going to use wh carbs

Frank, you should drop your 2.5 on your buddies virage.
I swear you'll have fun.
I did
my passenger took this pic a little too soon. we did 109 and 115 by myself.
Let me know if you get any big ideas:D

We put the 2.5 on my boat but the 15 inch mid didnt work out. It was a little bit to high. No bow lift. It ran 98 into the wind with someone in the back. We took it off and are switching it over to a 20. More to come with the 20.

Don't you want to go with the wind?

i love the lines of that boat... i think i'd be going through too many pairs of shorts if i were to run it that fast, or with the bow that far outta the water though... :)

i picked up a 99' 2.5 200 that needs a sleeve, so the build is beginning, i am going to port it to 260 specs, mill the heads, the usual mods, hopefully it will be running in a couple of weeks
