I wanting to know the exact reasoning for this other than "that's what mercury racing used". I emailed Mercury about this and they actually stated that using dfi oil was alright and wouldn't hurt the engine. I'm running it all out and changing to premium plus because that is what the manual says, but it has me puzzled too.

Merc's DFI oil is a full synthetic. Their Premium PLUS is a synthetic "blend".
The DFI oil is not a TCW III oil, so is NOT RECOMMENDED in anything other than DFI applications. The Premium PLUS CAN be used in any DFI engine as well as any 2 stroke that calls for TCW III oil.

Kind of funny because they are both DFI engines!!

The Premium Plus is being reformulated and will soon be a full synthetic oil as well as the DFI oil.;)

what they told me 3 yrs ago was the prem+ is what they used to run their qual testing. eg many hours at lake x, so that he oil they reccomend for the race motors. if they used the dfi oil then they would recommend it.

The 225 ProXS and 250XS are Hi performance engines that will turn in excess of 6000 RPM. The 250XS has a rev limiter set at 6400 RPM ( years 2005 and newer). The sythetic oils are better than petrolium based for Hi performance motors ( also less carbon buildup ).

this is from my merc rep...... merc hi perf tested their engines with prem plus.... not opti oil... tha'ts why it's recomended in the manual... DO NOT run opti oil in any thing BUT an OPTI... it doesn't mix with the gas.... opti's inject it thru the block where it is needed..... Kurt
