Gang -
I used to own an Allison Grandsport, but have since sold it for bigger rigs. I'm missing my Allison, so I'm thinking about looking for an XR2002. I have spent a total of five minutes in this boat, so I don't have much experience. Anyone care to comment about there driving impressions? What's the scoop? Can someone compare this boat to the Grandsports, XB2002's, and SS2000's that I've driven?
Thanks,
Mike Sufka

Mike , I don't own a XR 02 , but I have spent time in ,and Raced SLIDERS (For Sale)boat . It is an easier boat to drive then my XB 02 is . Only issue I know of is at slow speeds(under30mph) it porpuses some ,but pick upthe pace and it like it's on rails. Corona Mike has owned his same boat(XR 02) for 19 years now ,if that says anything . As far as the SS 2000 , I haven had a chance to drive one yet . There all Great Boats . Rich Martin 018:cool:

There was a rumor some time ago that Darris was going to build a few more XRs. Does anyone know if he ever did?

He didn't & never will, they're also dropping the XB2002. Also I've heard the SS2000 won't be around for much longer either !! Scott :(

Darris will build the XR 2002 but he has to have 10 or 12 people who wants them and will pay for them before he builds them. The last run of XR's were built in 97 and they are all composite transoms. As for the XB 2002 and The SS 2000 this is the last production year but you can still get one it will have to be special order. Tom

I don't think that there is any better hi-speed Basser than an Xb02... I don't think there is better "laker" than an SS2000... The XR02 may not handle the rough stuff quite as well as the SS, and not quite as durable as the SS... The xr2002 probably has a little better driver/passenger visibilty than the SS, and is probably a little quicker but I'm not sure it's faster when the big #'s start rollin'.. After all that, the XR2002 is probably My all time favorite hull and it takes a ton of self control to keep Me from trying to get a new one... I don't know how long I can be so strong... I will have either an SS or XR2002 someday, maybe even both... Both are nearly perfect in My opinion...

Like Rich said I'v had mine since new--19-1/2 years!--I have driven both the Grand Sports and the SS-2000 and don't really care that much for them--don't like setting that deep in the boat--The XR2002 is kind of pirticular about the gear case you run as well as the prop. but, when the boat is set-up, it drives very well. (mine will run 100++ and until you really get rolling--105/107--you can easly drive it with one hand) As far as rough water, it is what it is a lite narrow boat. It WILL run rough water better than you would think. If you get one, let me know I'll be happy to awnser any questions or help you with with set-up. Good Choice in my opinion! Mike T.

I agree with mike, when i get mutch over 110 the sportmaster starts to lift the stern out of the water. Does this wierd hop, kinda unnerving, Wish it didnt as the drag is just trolling at that speed. Would like to be able to let her eat and see what she will do but dont want to feed the fish. I like my 2002 just wish i didnt have to resort to lower unit exotica to achieve its full potential.

That post IS right on the money !!! I really think the SUPER SPORT is the best Allison EVER MADE !!! Scott :D
I have not personally driven my XR over 100 mph or my old SS2000 but does the XR 2002 suffer from the same ''Blow out" and subsequent "Bat turn" that the SS2000 are so infamous for?

SS-2000 is a super nice boat. I had one, but couldn't tame it. Those boats are exceptional quality (as is everything from Allison) and have some of the best lines out there. They are also one the best riding v-hulls for their size.
I didn't know this was the last year for the SS-2000. Sad news in my opinion. I'm curious as to why, and what will replace it. I heard 4 years ago Darris was working on a larger boat based off of the new fishing rig hull for a large outboard and/or possibly a stern drive.

sufka--I think the xr will handle speeds above 105-10 better than a ss. To me the ss is better looking, but I like sitting in the boat not on. The xr was way ahead of its time and still holds (?) the v ob record. The ss is nowhere near that fast. The xr beam is around 79--real narrow. Ss is 86-7. Xr is way lighter and quicker. Go with the legend, xr.

Bill the g-case really isn't much of a mistery as most folks would have you beleave. Just run a 200 case with either CLE guts or small shaft sportmaster guts in it. Use a Titus cone w/ a blow-out ring. That will get you to 117+ before you have to worry about it. If you want to run faster use a xr-4 orxr6 case. I've run 122.3 with that case and ran out of "stones" not motor/boat/case!:D Good Luck BE CAREFULL!!!

Thanks mike,my other motor had a 200 case and it drove exelent. But it scattered. I wish merc would take v bottem owners in to consideration when they build gearcases. I know sportys work fine on mod vp boats and heavy v's, but not light ones. I hate to give up bullet proof for another lower unit. Im going to try smoothing the sporty up some more and running it as high as it will possibly go , maybe even titus mods before the xr6 route

Yea Bill I know exactly what you are talking about. You take a 3000k/4000K gearcase and have to spend another 800-1000 $$$ on it just so it will run with--not faster!--than a case that costs about a 3rd! Doesn't make since. I run for my normal case a 200 with a 3-hole Bobs cone with cle guts--at this time but it's fixing to go to Titus--and a blow out ring. I'v had really good luck but, keep fresh oil in it. I also pinned the carrier after I quit listning to a "friend" who said that pinning the carrier weakins them. I'v run this case three years now with no problems on my drag motor! Good guys, luck Be SAFE Mike T.
