I have a 99 225 Opti with 167hrs on it. It does not start when it is cold without advancing throttle after it first tries to light. Once it is warm it fires up without any effort. There are no codes that come up on the ddt. Is this normal for the early motors or is there something that I am missing

Have you looked at the spark plugs ? Are you using the the iridium type NGK,s ? Do you have a DDT ? Are both heads coming up to temp ? What is the air and fuel psi @ cranking speed ? Is their any fuel in the air rail while running ? hf...

I don't have the ddt at this time but can attain it if needed. I have new platinum plugs (not iridium) in it. It did not make any difference in starting. It has been several months but it seems that the pressures were 8lbs low from what the book calls for on both rails (fuel and air) and the spread was around 9lbs. I did not check to see if there was any fuel in the air rail. I did not check running temp. The problem is only when it is cold and on the first start up of the day.

Chris, is the fuel bulb hard before you try to start it?

Never checked.

Chris, I'm no where as familiar with optis as HF, but if you are 8lbs low from what the book says, that could be your problem. I seem to remember that we were setting them to crank on the high side of their rec. range. the motors started right up and usually performed a little better like that.

fuel pressure 8 lbs low in the rails  that is a almost a 20% reduction in fuel flow across both rails... not good...

Find the dump air hose. It's gonna leave the at the bottom of the rail, not sure what side they are different on some motors. It will be a soft black hose going to either the adp plate or towards the front of the lower motor pan.Pinch it off while cranking ,this will raise the air psi. This test will give you an indication of the condition of the compressor.Reeds or cylinder condition of the compressor. hf...

We have a 99 opti 225 that when it gets cold you need to cycle the key twice. Turn the key to on and listen to the fuel pump run, when it stops turn it back on again, this will build up the fuel pressure even higher and that will help your starting problems. Once running you don't have problems ??? right??? Our 225 has 1037 hrs on it now and this is how it has been since new, but only during cold weather!

I will try that also. It will have to wait a couple of days. We have ice on the ground. That is rare around here.

I don't see any point in trying a new startup procedure in 26 degree weather when I never tried the old method when it was this temp. The weather will be back in the 60's by the weekend and I will try it then.

If your battery is fully charged and is the proper spec (mininum 1000 MCA starting battery) that engine should start on the first crank, regardless of temp. If it doesn't, then something is wrong. Correct fuel and air pressure are critical just like proper compression.
