What is the max advance timing set by merc ?

Its a 1992 175hp 2.5 carb

Depends on a number of variables. Compression, grade/type of fuel and port timing are right at the top of the pile. I would think that 25 degrees BTDC would be about max for a stock motor. Best keep an eye on the top of the pistons for signs of detonation if you are fooling with timing and don't have a lot of experience in this direction.

thanks but what I meant was what timing does the factory set the motor at as when I checked it was at 18 btdc is this the norm??

Yep, 18* is normal then the high speed spark advance box will advance it more.
