Hey all,
I'm doing a little "tune up" on my '88 mariner 2.4 200, serial OB106505. It has horizontal 5 petal reeds and WH-39 carbs. I was told that my motor was supposed to have 7 petal reeds. Did someone switch them? Are the WH-39's descent carbs? I searched around and couldn't find much about 'em. The motor is stock except the PO told me that he had the exhaust "drilled", and I'm not really looking for much more performance over stock, just want the thing to run good and maybe a little more low end torque and possibley spin a little faster.

Will different carb's be better, maybe WH-22's or 20's?

I was going to get either some boyesen or L&S reeds and maybe look for an aluminum flywheel. Any comments on this?

Also I've heard a lot about one piece heads, I think it would clean up the look of the motor up a lot, but exactly what else will I bennefit from this? Are they higher compression? Which ones should I look for? do they all fit?

Thanks for any advice you all have

Peter

the 200 2.4's were 5 petal horizontal reeds, the 225's carbed bridgeports and 2.4 offshore EFI's were the 7 petal reeds

those carbs sound like the standard number for the 200's but i'm not positive, T-Rex is the carb man

boyesen dual stage reeds would be a nice improvement on the low end and mid-range

the aluminum flywheel is in my opinion for high rpm upper bearing safety, and a bit of quicker "spin-up"

on the heads be sure the bolt pattern matches the one piece bolt pattern, myself i liked the later model two piece head but the one piece is of course the latest and greatest chamber design from the factory so to speak

heres my old 2.4 7 petal motor that was stolen with only 5 hours of breakin time, wh-20's, aluminum flywheel and hours of porting done

That sucks Talon, I feel fo ya.

Thanks for the reply.

One more question
I wanted to put some v-stacks on my motor (I know they won't do much for performance) mainly because my airbox cover has some cracks in it and doesn't look so great, and I don't want to pay merc for a new one. The problem is i have a clam shell cowling and I would lose the mounting provisions.

What kind of options do I have for a one piece cowl? I'm deffinetley not made of money so I am not looking for a lightweight race cowl or nothing, just some kind of factory cowl that will work would be fine. Something like the one in the backround of that pic you put up would be cool. How much do you think I could get somethin like that for?

Talon, just one more, I promise
What kind of hoses are these? I like the clear look and mine need replacing.

well on the airbox/velocity stacks i believe the stacks come with the mounting holes for the clamshell brackets already drilled and tapped in them, ive never used the stacks with the clamshells so i dont have first hand experience with that set-up, the one in the background was a mariner lightweight plastic one piece i had as a back-up for the merc one if it ever got broken

the clear bleedline i got from the merc dealer in orlando, and also get it at a place here called tractor supply, and it can be gotten at any chainsaw rental company that sells parts for them

U won't see a major gain wit the 20's or 22's witout making sum other changes...I built a warmed over 2.4 (same year az yours) and it ran quite well wit the 39's on it...Your motor cumz wit 5 peddle read blocks and iz chrome bore...A few extra holes in da pistons, knock a few thousandz off da heads, lil exhaust work, and U be rock'in wit that lil motor...U can use the Vilosity stacks wit the clam shell covers, but there iz NO clearance in front of them wit the cover closed and the front on it...Bobs stacks has the provisions for the cowl support for the clam-shells...Go to the By-U-Boyz web site and go to Projects...go to end of projects to the archives and check out the Cherry 2 fo...U may find sumpthin U like...REX:cool:
