got a guy at work who has a 69 camaro small block with a 4 speed with hurst shifter

lets his son take it to a rod run, next time he goes to drive it after his son had it out he hears a sound coming from the tranny area but the sound goes away everytime he goes into 3rd or 4th gear, he says it's a rattle type sound like somethings loose and when he gives it gas in 1st and 2nd gear he hears it and can feel it a bit through the shifter but goes away in 3rd and 4th

sounds to me (from his explanation of the symptoms) that his son did a hefty burnout and a second gear slam and it may be in the tranny itself??

any ideas what i should look for on this?

Thanks

I'm thinking he may have done exactly what you said and bent/broke the 1-2 shift fork. It may not be properly engaged now in 1st and 2nd causing the noise.

Hmmmm i wonder how hard that is to fix? ive never been into one but this guy is a great guy in his mid 50's and has helped me along with welding techniques and i want to help him if i can

where would a guy find an exploded view of a GM 4 speed??

I've had a few of those trannys. If you drop the arms off the side of the tranny the whole plate will unbolt off the side of the case and you can inspect from there. Check out a site called "Team Camaro" or "Team Chevelle" and post the question. I think you will get some more detail on what to look for once inside that thing.
