Thanks to all who responded to my last Thread...very helpful.

Hope this doesn't get too elementry....still trying to learn the basics. Keep reading about the 2.5 225,260,280 etc. Looks like some oportunity to build additional power form these parts.

I have a 21' padded V hull CC I use in the bay fun and fishing, GPS is 47 with 19 pitch 150 Johnson Carb motor. Very thirsty motor pushing the big boat around!!
I have a 2.5 EFI Merc available to rebuild and repower the boat. I want to maintain reliabilty but gain as much mid and top end as is practicle.
I understand these motors are very reliable and can be run at higher RPM's without consiquence.

Will the 2.5 260 air horn fit? Any gains here?
Any advantage going to a different tuner?
Are there other power heads that will bolt up to my midsection.

Should I just try to find an 225 or 250 Opti?

Any help much appreciated.

THis is just my opinion which is based on some assumptions, so I could be totally wrong here but..

Most CC's are heavy boats. The high performance motors like the 260 and 280 are designed to develop horsepower in the higher rpm curves. Even with the pad, the boat may be a bit heavy to really get out of a 260 or 280 what they are designed to give you. Again, I am assuming your CC like most is a heavy boat. NOt sure your budget, but a 250xs, 250xb, promax 300, promax 300x, or the big daddy 300xs might give you more what you are looking for but since they are fairly new motors, they are more $$ used than many of the 2.5 you wil see around.

I also have a CC and had a 2.5 carbed 200 that I did everything to try to make faster. I worked that motor to death lugging that heavy boat (23' CC). Got a 250 3.0L motor for her, and not only picked up 10mph, but everything seems effortless for the boat now, where with the 2.5 200 really had to work. Gas mileage is better too.

Thanks Fish... yes the boat is heavy at 2200. I agree fully. My instincts were telling me the 2.5 would be down on power and I would have to zing it to get what I wanted. The larger motors do make more sense for my application.

Looks as if I'm on the hunt for a 3.0!!

Thanks again...CBD

I agree as well.......no substitute for cubic inches. Look for a 2003 or newer Optimax. You will have power, and economy and be kind to the environment as well!

Don't know if you have considered a 4 stroke but Suzuki makes a 200, 225, 250 3.6 liter and a 4.0 300. Pretty sure these are as big as they get. Also been told Suzuki is rock solid, Ed

Recently I got a chance to ride in a 36ft. Wellcraft powered by triple 250 Suzuki 4 strokes. This was a whale watching tour boat out of Victoria, B.C.
There were 8 of us on board. I was rather impressed...the engines delivered alot of power and had no trouble pushing us along at a pretty good clip...55mph plus...and that was just cruising! They were very quiet as well.
The operator said they were very pleased with Suzuki. He also said he really liked the Optimax engines as well, and they use them on many of their other tour boats.
