Hi guy's, can anyone identify this prop through the part number. It is described as a chopper prop, Quicksilver 48 89800 A5 19 Pitch, the guy thinks it's a 14 1/2. I just want to be sure it is what the guy say's it is before I drive an hour. I have been looking around on the net and can't find a web site that has mercury prop part numbers.

Thanks for the help.

I think Pyro was the first to post this link

Your number doesn't seem to match. Nor did Merc ever make a 19" chopper, or any A5 chopper < 22"

Be carefull with choppers. The big ones, which are the most common, won't work on your 4.25" gearcase without the weed cutters being cut off. Except for the Chopper 2's, which I think have no weed cutters.

You better drive for an hour and see what that prop is.

Hi David, thanks for the information. I spoke to the guy again and this prop is a through hub exhaust and he swears that the part number is correct. I suspect it is not a chopper but just a regular stainless prop.
I would like to get a couple of different props i.e. one for skiing, maybe 19 or so and one for speed. I'm not sure what pitch that would be. I plan to use a small jackplate with minimal set back on this boat so at least the height will be adjustable for different uses, also if need be i can get rid of the torque tab or at least adjust it for a larger diameter . As you can see I have a late 79 140 inline 6 for power, the props that it came with is a 13x19 and a 13x17. This motor came off of a 19 foot heavy fishing boat. What are your thoughts on this. I believe a small eared over hub without weed cutters is what I'm looking for.....correct?

You can keep the weed cutters on a small ear chopper. These props were made for the inline 6. I'd try a small ear chopper or a Laser. Used Lasers are cheap. I'm guessing you need 22-24". Your current props should work for skiing or cruising with a boatload.

If you drag your boat to my cottage (Orillia) you can try my props. I have a small ear 20" chopper that is probably too low pitch for peak speed for you, and a 24 Laser that might be about right.

Neither of those props is for sale, but testing might help you figure out what you need. Or you can just buy some props. If the props don't work out, you can sell them again. Props are relatively liquid assets.

Hi David, thanks for the help, is your cottage on Simcoe or couchaching (sp). I am going to keep looking for props throughout the winter , as you say they are a liquid asset that can be bought and sold pretty easly. The laser props, what years were they produced as I see that they now have the laser two out. What kind of speeds were you seeing with your props.

Hi Rich, The boat is a 16' SuperSidewinder with a 140 inline going on the back, These boats arn't stable over 65 mph so thats about top speed needed. I also want to pull a fat ass skier out of the water on occassion. I would think two differant props are in order? boat weighs about 700 lbs and motor about 300 lbs, passengers, fuel and battery ect. about 500lbs. Max rpm on engine about 5800 +-. I was also thinking of a small jack plate with minimal set back just to give me the best of both situations.

What do you think I should look for for props.

Thanks.

Thanks. For pulling skiers you for sure want to go with a through the hub prop. Over the hub props tend to slip on take off due to the exhaust going over the blades. I would go with a 13 to 13.5 x 19. And for top end 22p to 24p small ear chopper or a laser2. Iam asking $200 for the choppers if your interested and i may have a good used prop for sking. Thanks Hope this Helps. Rich
