They have very good products.

And the dual reed replacement is a good option.

They do perform.

Have better idal and all around performance.

I have done no testing with the 3.0 but found improvements with the 2.5

Plus they have a lifetime warranty.

(Top Reed)
The top reed is specially shaped, lightweight and resilient for crisp throttle response at partial throttle or low RPMs.

The bottom reed is thicker, stiffer and ported to provide stability, maximum flow and horsepower at high RPMs.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The outboard performance innovation you've read about in BASS & WALLEYE BOATS, BASSMASTER, B.A.S.S. TIMES, HONEY HOLE, POWERBOAT, TRAILER BOAT and HOT BOAT magazines is here! Fishermen know there's more to outboard performance than just going fast. Whether you're a tournament bass angler who demands a faster hole shot, a walleye fanatic who depends on a smooth-trolling outboard, or a saltwater sportsman who's conscious of rising fuel costs, here's the quickest, surest route to a better-running outboard: Boyesen Power Reeds! If you're a fisherman running an outboard from 9.9 to 300 hp, you'll feel the difference Boyesen Power Reeds can make with your very first run!

How Boyesen Reeds Work ::
Reeds are one-way valves controlling the amount of air/fuel mixture entering the crankcase of your outboard engine, then sealing it in to prevent it from escaping. Every two-cycle outboard has them. But the stock reeds in your outboard have a single-stage design that limits their efficiency. That's why stock outboards often cough and sputter at idle, fail to deliver a good hole shot, feel boggy or lifeless under throttle application, burn too much fuel or lack top-end punch. Plus, standard reeds are made of metal. Should one break, it could cause extensive damage to your outboard. Boyesen Power Reeds are different...and better! They feature a patented dual-stage design allowing our reeds to respond instantly to any change in air/fuel flow as you accelerate or back off the throttle. The result? A dramatic increase in efficiency and performance across the entire power band, from start-up to flat out!

my 99 225 efi had 6 pedal steel reeds. i installed the duel stage and did notice a little better idel and smoother running throughout the entire power band. go to boysen directly you can buy direct from them. it is a little cheaper than retail. very good customer service.

What does the lifetime warranty cover?

Humm, thats a good one!!!

Anything but what you break!!

How's that!

AL

I don't know, but I had a set that was chipped and they replaced them. All they want is the reeds and a statement of how old and what they were run on.
They replaced them.

I 'm not complaining!!!!

Sounds good but I am assuming any sign of lean sneezing or tips burning I am sure they will not cover them.

I think the biggest thing about Boyesen reeds on a stock motor is that if they get broken, the pieces will usually go through the motor without causing much harm. Steel reeds, on the other hand...................

If I need reeds, I'll get Boyesen, but I'm not going to tear into my motor just to replace the stock reeds expecting great horses to suddenly appear.

i put boysen reeds a my 150 merc bass boat motor. went from 5800 rpm to 6200 rpm on top end. better idle and hole shot too. gas mileage was better, not much, but enough to notice. was turning a 26" merc chopper on a hydrasports x-270. lightly modded motor- '83 premix, 175 carbs, 10 degree spark advance module, ex. holes cut above cav. plate, boysen reeds. prop had been worked by hill's prop service- a little more pitch and cupped for more stern lift- bow ran high enough already. i was happy with mine, i'd recommend them. ran them for about 4 years, fished at least twice a week, mostly more. put a lot of hours on them. was not uncommon to run an hour or more to get to out of the way spots tournament fishing, wfo all the way. buy them and enjoy. not that bad to install, and worth the effort. but maybe i say that because i'm a mechanic and motorhead-just enjoy this sort of stuff.

Who makes the factory Mercury reeds? Does Boyesen? The only visual difference is the color?

I have run them in 2 different engines, and definitely think they are worth it. You can get them cheap from Pit Stop Marine, if you are a member here, and Rickracers, although you will have to wait a little bit from Rick, not sure about pit stop.

You have to lap the reed cages though, so get a piece of glass and some wet/dry sand paper, and sand them down smooth. Otherwise the reeds will not seal properly.

I have found through my experiances that the Tony Doukas Racing Reed Valves works best for me and my customer's applications , I use nothing else in our MANY rebuilds with GREAT success and longevity second to NONE ! Also I have no allegiance with any brand as I COULD sell or install anybodys reed valve I choose BUT like the performance of the Doukas Reed....

Good luck,

I've ran both Boyesen and TDR in my Rude and will have to say that I prefer the TDR reeds over the Boyesens. Even with the "dual stage" Boyesens the single stage TDR's give more torque out of the hole and better throttle response than I had with the Boyesens.

There are some good threads on here about Boysens compared to stock, if you use the search I am sure you can find some good reading. Most seem to say don't expect your boat to go faster. It might, some do some don't. Most agree they do idle better and are more responsive, usually take less gas but is hard to measure. You do get the safety feature of not having metal reeds, but most motors don't break them that often either. Others say it is a good opportunity to mod your cages, you can find some gains doing that when you put your new reeds in.
