Since new these motors tended to smoke quite a bit after starting them and anytime near idle. Is this just a characteristic of these motor?

Yepp mate. Wherever u see an EFI, one is bound to see a cloud of smoke when the engine is cold or when starting it up. Tends to clear out though when in cruising RPM. Maybe using Premium PLUS outboard oil would help reduce the smoking, along with reducing carbon build up, superior lubrication......
Can't speak for the 2002, but I have 2x 2004's and one 2005 and see almost no smoke. I can't imagine the are that different from the 02's, but I can't say for sure.

I have an 05 225 EFI, Does smoke a bit when you start it, however, seems to clear up once in cruising. In an efi, take smoke as a good signs, as it shows that it is mixing oil properly, as after all, it is the oil which causes the smoke.

1.Yes when you cut the engine off for a long time. The fuel and oil mix in the intake is left. The fuel will evaporate and oil will stay.
2. Also idling for long periods will load up the bleed system. Same result for fuel and oil separation.
3. The vapor tank, ( really a oil mix tank and catch for the regulator) Will have lost fuel from sitting and have a higher content of oil from sitting.
