What does low emission mean? Is there an industry wide standard they have to meet and does anyone know what it is?

Or is it just less than something else so can super polute with one while reducing the other?

Its done on a corporate average. If you sell enough clean ones, you can sell a few dirty ones.

The number (FEL) is derived by sampling the exhaust a five mode points, ( WOT, idle, and three mid points). Then some math to arrive at a grams/ Kw hour for the motor. Motors are then grouped in families. And more math to come up with a corporate average.

Do you know if they reduce only one pollutant or try to reduce all of them?

I seem to remember two of them are opposites. Increase temp to eliminate one-oxides of nitrogen? But this increases another- carbon monoxide?
Reduce temp to reduce CO and you increase NOX.

They are Federal standards that the the industry and the EPA (Power hunger bastards) agreed to about 10 years ago. The EPA gave the industry 7 years to phase in the new standards and that's up now. I'm sure the EPA has the numbers posted somewhere. But the whole recreation marine industry uses less than 3 percent of the fuel burned in this country. Seems the EPA is into extremes like the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia is.

They measure HC (hydrocarbons) and NOx ( oxides of nitrogen). The FEL is the total of the two. (with all the math and weighting of the mode points):cool:

Kinda opposites, run rich, HC goes up but NOx comes down, run lean, HC goes down but NOx goes thru the roof. Its a real balancing act, but hey, the airs cleaner in the end.;)

Europe also measures CO for their regs.

A little off topic, but I just read an intersting article from Energy Justice Network that states, - Read whole article at

A National Academy of Sciences report concluded that,

most, if not all ethanol fuel plants are emitting air pollutants at many times the rate allowed by their permits.

ethanol and MTBE blends do little to reduce smog.
With each gallon of ethanol you get 12 gallons of sewage-like effluent produced by the fermentation/distillation

<O:p</O:pbatches of bad ethanol and sewage are dumped into streams, threatening fish and plants with chloride, copper and other wastes which deprive waters of oxygen when they decompose<O:p</O:p

Sounds like the EPA should spend more time regulating the ethanol fuel refineries to decrease pollution, and leave the marine engines alone.

Ethanol fuel companies have received billions of dollars in tax credits & loans this year, from the government, and their "allowed" to pollute too! Not fair.

I remember back not that long ago when the huggers were wanting electric cars. They said the newest low emissions cars put out less pollutants than the power plants did who made the electricity....oops.

I think ethanol is a political bandwagon everyone is on right now. If it does anything remains to be seen but I guess it is a step forward to something. Whatever the case, corn is not going to make much fuel for us.
