View Full Version : Analog Gauge Adapter for Optimax
Does anyone know what is needed when analog gauges are used with a new Optimax engine? I dont want to change to smartcraft gauges. Also, can a Smartcraft 1000 monitor still be used in conjuction with Autometer analog gauges?

There are a couple diff. ways to use the analog guages. It also depends on which guages you want to use.
I have analog speedo and tach, volt, trim, gas level and temp. All are Autometer. One dealer told me I just need an analog adapter if i keep it this way. If I want to add a system monitor I guess things change ?

hey make a 14pin to 8 pin adapter for the outboard.
(trying to find part number)
The Brown wire is still for the analog temp gauges.
The wires up front for tach and is the same also.
I am trying to get the install on the pressure gauge and you can hook your water pressure type speedo to the engine also.
Tach wire and volt wire & temp wire will be the same as hooked up if you retained the 8 pin system controls.

Thanks Al, any other info or part numbers would be great.

the analog and digital guages are interchangable. the only differencs is the digital has 3 wires and the analog has 2 if you count the ground[black]. the guages come with the wire attache to the sender. the smart craft is independent of the analog trim guage, so using analog is no problem. infact your better off with the analog since the digital is 3-4 time slower to react.

The adapter harness is 84-896542T01. This will connect your 8 pin boat harness to the new 14 pin engine harness. If you want to hook up a system monitor in addition to your analog guages you can run a seperate SmartCraft harness back to the engine. The simplest setup would be to use a SmartCraft data harness with terminal resistors built in (one at each end) then you can plug directly into the system monitor.
The engine can run both analog and digital at the same time.
Having said that, I have rigged a few of the newest Optimax engines and I much prefer to use the latest controls and harnesses with these motors rather than depending on the "unknown" condition of wires and switches that are on an older rig. The new keyswitch/harness assemblies have a SmartCraft take-off plug built in which is very convenient for rigging. Even the newest conventional standard side mount control (with built in keyswitch) has a connector sticking out of it for SmartCraft connection.
Thanks for the info SOSMERC thats exactly what I want to do. I had a dealer suggest that I change the ign. switch but I just put a new one in last year. The wiring harness is also only one year old. My throttle is not Mercury ( Its a Morse MY control), so I'm going to stick with that.

If you use the "digital" sender on the engine for the temp. guage it will read a little lower than it should. I change to an analog temp. sender and mount it on a custom bracket that has the sender sitting in a little pocket on the starboard cyl. head near the top. The sender I use is the one that Merc. uses in their analog temp. guage kit's ($20). For the trim guage the sender for that needs to be changed to an "old school" Merc. analog sender (pre; smartcraft Optimax @2000yr. [$60]). The tach. and volt guages are a std. hook-up with the 14 to 9 pin adaptor harness. The gas guage is a boat harness item. The speedo can be hull pick-up or motor/gearcase pick-up depending on if the gearcase has a pick-up in it or not. This will have you covered in good shape. Drastic.

I want to use my old Livorsi RPMs used with the 260s on the 250xs, is this possible?
I have the 14 to 8 pin adapter and have not tested it yet but everuthing seems ok exept for the rpm dont react.
Thanks

My 2008 accessory guide says the Analog Gauge Interface Kit is for ALL SmartCraft Compatible Engines 2002 and newer. This sure makes it sound like a requirement. The kit is part number 892486K08 and lists for $129.41.
I just happen to have one and I'm looking at the supplied instructions. The instructions say that this interface can ONLY be used with DTS to drive analog and/or digital link guages. It goes on to say that the factory default for the tachometer has been set for Analog in the PCM. So using either the DDT or the CDS you can alter the PCM configuration for your particular needs.
Sooo.....since your keyswitch/harness is the old analog 8 pin you are already wired for analog and since the factory default in the ECM is Analog I think your tach SHOULD work now. It needs ground, switched power (the purple wire) and a gray sender wire. You should see over 9 volts running on the gray wire...this voltage is pulsing so you need to read it with a peak reading voltmeter such as a CD-77 or standard meter with a CDI peak reading voltage adapter. The engine may actually have to be running for the tach to work...though it should "zero out" when you put the key in the run position.

sosmerc.....this is great info thanks a lot, maybe since this is used engines that have run smartcraft gauges the settings have been altered and I need to hook the engine up with a DDT to alter the settings ? I hope the ecu can make a signal simular to the old flywheel 12 pole alternator....
I probably have to test it first.
Thanks a lot.

Bringing this thread back from the dead.....
Sorry, Greg, don’t shoot me!
My Progression has a new 250 ProXS. It has the 84-896542A01 adapter harness from 8 pin (key side) to 14 pin (engine side) Picture 1. It also has the analog trim limit converter.
Everything works on my dash EXCEPT my temp gauge. Gauge works, tested and verified. Currently the key side tan bullet connector is wired to the boat side tan bullet connector. After poking around looking at Faria instructions, it looks like the tan wire key side should be wired directly to the tan/blue wire on the port side temp sender at the air pump. Picture 2. Correct?
Now my VesselView Mobile gets delivered tomorrow.... if I am correct in disconnecting tan/blue from port side sender, will my VesselView still give me temp from the other two senders in the heads? I think I’m just hooking the VVM to the yellow termination plug (3rd pic), so the head senders should give me the readout on the VVM, yes?

I emailed VVM because it only gives one temperature. They stated it comes from the Starboard head. Hopefully the boat audio alarm / worning horn is hooked up to the port head but I have no idea. Can anyone confirm that?
Also unfortunately with the latest update the app is no longer working on my android nexus 6P but works on my friends I-phones. May 1st VVM support said they are working on it and plan to release a new software version to fix the issues for android. It worked for me last year though.
I have the analog gauges gaugesl with the adapter on my 2006 175 opti and my temp gauges work but my trim gauges do not.
