Im askin because i have a 2 yr old 60 merc with barely any hours on it and I cranked it up saturday morning and it was running at an idle then made a clunk so i tryied to put it in gear and it acted like the cable had broke! So I put it on the trailer got home pulled out the carrier and the damn pinion bearing was broke in half!!! all of the other parts are still imaculant! Started lookin at the pinion gear and where its broke at the cast has like waves or weaves in it like it was a bad cast or somethin! there is no rounded spots in the clutch dog, no wear on the other gears, the pinion nut was still tight, the oil was was not burnt or had no metal in it! And was allways serviced and winterized regularly!!!! Is there anything mercury can do about this?

Not what you want to hear but...I think you gonna be on your own with this one, especially since you took it apart yourself.
The way to address a warranty issue is through the dealer network first.
Even if they visit this site, no Mercury employee is going to get involved at this level as it could jepordize their job.

If you can't get a straight answer from the dealer, call Mercury direct

Take it to a good servicing dealer, he can look up all the history on your engine through mercnet from your serial number, then have a Mercury rep. check it out. The out come could be positive if there is no abuse, can't hurt to try.

If you have all the paper work of when you bought the motor, there is no reason why they can't register the motor for you. Until it is in the system at merc. i don't think you'll have any luck getting something done. later Larry D

Why not just take it to a merc dealer ? If it is under the three year mark warr should cover it.That is what most merc customers with warr issues do. hf...

I had a warranty issue with my trim. One of the rams was bad, and Merc picked up the tab. So in the future I would recomend giving the local merc dealer a shout first before you tear into it. They just run the serial number and they will know if it's under warranty. Assuming the dealer is worth a darn. lol

Well I have expertise in the area of contracts, warranties, ECT. Now you could have all the Mercury mechanics in the world back your claim and I believe your claim to have validity. The problem is if the work is done in your own garage rather than an authorized dealership you are going to have a real issue with the chiefs upstairs. Working, modifying any mechanical item while under factory or extended warranty is the absolutely the quickest to void your coverage. Now there are some exemptions usually like emergency service in case of a breakdown, ECT. What I would recommend to would be to put it back the way you found it and take it to an authorized mechanic. Good luck, Naiscoot
