I am checking the engine control rigging on a recent acquisition of a Johnson V-6 (circa 1983).

What is odd is that at full control travel, the best I can get is 3/4 throttle (as indicated by carburetor venturi plate position). The control works free and also goes to its full travel. The control cables are adjusted (and have been) to thier maximum amount. It appears that it has been rigged this way for a long time (possibly from day 1). I adjusted the rigging a bit near the carburetors but this only makes minimal change (to the point of losing idle capability). The carbs (and carb linkage) work fine and free to full throttle when the remote cables are disconnected.

The engine has low hours and all linkages are tight and free of wear. Is there some positioning within the control that can change the rate of travel and distance? If not, any good aftermarket controls out there (might like a 2 lever as well)? Prefer hand throttle over foot throttle. Running a Hydrostream V-King.

Thanks,

Larry S.

Did you Link and sync the carbs as per the manual? Is the trottle stop hitting the block? Can you manually open the carbs all the way?

Looks like we have a similar set up. How is your total set up and what numbers do you see? Also, how does the boat handle?

Ralph; Carbs are links and synced per the manual. Carbs do open all the way (with ease) when disconnected from the cables (pushing on the bellcrank where the cable attaches). As far as the stop, do you mean in the control? Hard to say (haven't opened up the control yet). It is possible to be a cable problem (i.e. incorrect cables with limited throw)? Things look fine on the engine side.

Phish: I have yet to drive this boat (its been a project for quite a while). No performance numbers to provide yet, though hopefully in the spring. Boat has a V-6 Johnson 150, bolted to the transom right now (prop shaft 3" below the pad) with a 27" SRX prop (which may be too much prop). In any event, just trying to get in in the water and then will start dialing things in. Looks like much less HP than you have (though unfortunately I still have most of the weight). How does your V-King handle with all that HP on tap?

it may be that the cable stretched since you can open it up manually with the cable disconnected.

On some controls there is a choice of where the throttle cable is fastened to the arm. A hole further from the pivot will produce more travel.

If this is the case there will be more than one hole in the control arm on the throttle control.
