old ranger

I cut the heads on my trusty ol' black 2.0 175HP Merc last spring and brought the compression up to 138 or so. It ran great all summer. Its a fishing motor on a Ranger Bass boat. When I was winterizing it this fall I pulled the plugs and they looked clean, but I notice the paint around the spark plug holes looks like it may have been hot. It looks a little different shade of black. Not burnt, but like it may have been hotter than the rest of the head. I did repaint the heads with High Temp engine paint and replaced the temp warning thing. I did not rejet, as it always seemed rich to me, would foul plugs often, and even seemed to 4 stroke at low speeds. What do you think?
