View Full Version : EFI or Carb for HP

I have a 1995 EFI 200 hp stock with a bracato box and some minor mods. I just purchased a 1995 200 hp carburated outbaord.
I was going to build a motor. CC'd heads, send the block out to be ported to 240 hp plus specs. set of welded pin stock pistons (lightened)
I was told to bore the EFI throttle plates larger, blend intake and use Boysen reeds.
Now that I have the 200 hp carburated engine I don't know if I should concentrate on the carburated block, or the efi block. Which has better potential to modify? Which intake has better CFM flow. I have a feeling the carb engine ported up would yield a better top end. where the EFI block would give me a better all around engine, but not as much on the top. Both motors are steel lined fishin motors. What is the max rpm I can run with the steel liners. I have heard that steady throttle not over 6,500 but can take short bursts to 8,000 rpms. is this true?

The carb motor can make more power than the Laser EFI motor unless you go to an SVS. Then the over all performance will be better with the EFI

Merc 2.5 200 hp fishin mo-Hey the domes on the stock pistons are super thick, +.260" . My race ingines of past I wouldn't go any thinner than .200".

Why not deck the top of the block .030" and lobe off .030" from the dome of each piston. You would have your squish unchanged but the pistons would be alot lighter - and the .030" off the dome of the pistons would open the intake ports at BDC by .030". I would lower the exhausts by .030" but not touch the hieght, because the pistons cut .030" would be like raising the exhausts by .030".
You would have .230 dome thickness which is plenty.
Any one done this before??

Don't deck anything. Leave your piston domes alone. They're thicker for a reason. Put a SVS intake on it, cut the heads, and if you're still not happy after one season, you can have port work done to give it more top end, but you may lose a little bit of bottom end punch.
A carb 200 would seem like a sick motor after runnin an EFI with a PCU...

I dun a chrome bore 2.4 tha same thang U are talk'in, cept I took off .050" ov tha pistons, and same off tha deck...STRONG az a bull on bottom and mid, but will not wind up...I say wind up az in won't spin over 8600......I had a 300 drag that I aquired from sumbody that iz a major contender in the ODBA pro gas class, and he cut .035" off tha pistons, and same off tha deck...The mota lost top rpm, BUT swung a 26" prop harder than it used to slang a 24"!!!....The cut mota wuz limited to 9200, and befo tha cut would turn 10,600!!!....
I thank tha exstended intake duration iz what gives it tha power increase, but I don't understand why it won't turn...In reality it should turn juss like a mota that haz had tha ports raised, but it won't...
Good luck wit what ever way ya go...Don't thro them carbs under tha shelf yet...They take a lot ov work to git wher U want them, but wit enuff work, EFI ain't got chit on a good set ov carbs!!!...Juss my very unprofessional opinion!!!
