I have a 1989 150 Merc XR4. Iwas full throttle and it came to a very slow stop and can't get it started. It tries to fire but won't. ANY suggestions:confused: Bassnnut

try squeezing the buld real good then try to start it. If it starts it is the feul pump.
Rebuild it. This assuming you have laready checked that the spark is good.

Didn't run out of gas-Tried the bulb trick-no different. But drained the tank and added NEW fuel and added Heet(type) and it now starts and runs in Cold start but dies when I put it back to neutral-Any ideas??
Do a compression test just to be sure.
Rebuild the fuel pump, especially if it hasn't been done before, after 17 years it's definitely due.
Clean/replace all fuel filters.
Try a remote fuel tank and fuel line, to rule out an air leak or tank pickup restriction.
After all that's been checked, start checking the ignition system components...

What Pyro suggested and
I would also put a new set of spark plugs , sometimes the simplest things cause problems,
if you still have the problem I would go through the carbs
