I am looking for pics of a homemade engine stand, preferably out of wood since my woodworking skills are much better than my metalworking skills

Lot's of guys use a regular car engine stand with a piece of plywood bolted to it to hang the outboard on.

Heck I just used a bunch of 2+4's, and plywood gussets on the bottom. Held my 235 and 185 just fine. I used two for each leg down and the used enough on the top to bolt the motor to. So thats 4-2 bi's going down for leggs, the feet are made of 2 bi material. Nail another 2+4 in the bottom ends of the leggs to keep it ridgid. Legs should 4 to 5 inches longer than the shaft. And for the feet, use a 2+4 for them, with plywood gussets. feet should be 4 to 5 feet long so the motor will not fall over. Cut the plywood, 1/2" to 3/4" kinda shaped like this (^) At least 18" on each side of the legg. Make it about 2 1/2 feet wide. Don't spare the nails, or screws. I hope you plan on putting something bigger than a 2 hp on it.

I know! But the search does not work for me, as soon as I put in more than one word it craps out.
I was looking at my car engine stand and will make that work.

A T type engine stand isn't worth a crap for an outboard stand. (I've got 2 with engines mounted on em) You have to mount the engine too high because of the center beam in the stand, plus they're flimsy and tipsy. The perimeter base type HD engine stand that most suppliers rate at 1000 lbs is EXCELLENT. Sam's usta' sell a good one for it, but went to a fold up that isn't easily adaptable. Summit sells one that's perfect, but it's about 30 bucks more than Sam's was. I think the Summit one is either 79 or 89 and I think it's freight paid.
Here's a picture of mine with my F1 V8 on it. This is the one you want. You can bolt this one together backwards to be like transom angle, instead of the way they're made for car motors to flex for the weight.

Thats a motor!!! Looks like a 20" shaft may drag a little, like 10". Could splice in a piece and make that shaft longer to hold a taller motor. Can I borrow that motor, please. It will only see fresh water. Promice.

Thats racemans!
Besides it a Johnson, it will not run (operate) But you could do like all other Johnson's, bolt it on ya boat and drive around pulling the trailer!
Could not find a pic of a Mercury on one, they seem to be on boats everywere!!!

That is one of the "BADDDDESSST" motors ever produced by a manufacturer, (marine anyway) I wish I had one myself.

There's an 8 on ebay right now. Just the motor. And some old piece of junk with a 25"shaft counter rotation. Good for NASCA, only turns left.

The one on E Bay was an earlier design and the mid was 7 or 8 inches taller than mine. The E Bay one was also a carb motor instead of injected. Even so, I thought the 9K was a helluva deal. I was told by somebody who SUPPOSEDLY KNEW that the reserve was 12K, so I was surprised when it relisted and sold for a lot cheaper.

Well I'm a Mercury man,
but they had a boat race on Rocks Pond back in 91-92 ????
All Mercury's and Ben Robertson showed up with one of those V8 machines.
He ripped them a new one!
It was not even close.
Loudest dam outboard I ever herd!
I have pictures somewhere, I just need to find them.

2X2X11ga steel tubing, 11 ga flat plate, 4 casters, a chop saw and wire machine..... or find you a welder with a little slack time and you get something like this:
BTW the two legged stands are a bit more stable.. the one legged was the proto. The others were longer and more stable in that respect as well.

if you wanna do it cheap n solid n made outta wood, just pay attention to the details, the stringers are supported by a wider base-plate on each sdie (to add support n prevent callapsing,)n the width of the frame must be made for wide enough for the mounting plate-in-between the structure,n the wheels are just tool box wheels you can get from a hardware store to make it mobile.
bigbore
11-04-2006, 02:30 PM
n heighth must be tall enough for the skeg to clear the 2+6,as the motor obviously needs to be hung on the structure side of the dolly.

You might want the feet running on both sides of the uprights. Mine is like that feet run 2 feet on both sides, so she won't tip over, fo sho. That is a nice one, wood come in handy fer a mellow,or dog roast when done using it. Wood is free when you drive by new home sites.
bigbore
11-04-2006, 05:33 PM
you could bolt (a mounting plate)to that n hang the motor on it,the heighth is gonna be close.
if you go to a construction site n get the lumber you need, make sure it's out of the scrap pile,(after the house is framed)as it's illegall,an falls on the contractor's insurence to re-place the lumber that's still in tact with the lumber-package of the house.

Well yea, just ask them. Most of them say if it's close to the dumpster it's fair game. Heck thats how I built my new seats, and good stuff 5 ply. Can't find that at home depot. And if you want you should be able to pull enough nails out of your tires as well.

This is not something Im proud of, but you wanted a picture of a wood outboard stand!
http://www.photobucket.com/albums/k224/A_Fn_NOOB/Ranger/Stand/
I wasnt interested in making something pretty or permanent, or Id have spent longer than the 15 minutes it took me to make. (I was focused on other tasks at hand and needed to get the motor off the boat) Some plywood bracing in the corners would make it indestructuble.
The beams on this stand are birch from 10ft hardwood pallets. (If I wanted to make a permanent one, Id have used oak or hickory) There is an amazing amount of spectacular hardwoods that get thrown away as trash. Anyway, my wheels are 3/4 pvc :)

Here's a couple of our stands. The red stand is one of a pair my father built a long time ago. The black one was thrown together last week with some scrap metal that was left laying around. He really enjoys building this kind of stuff. If anyone might be interested in a stand like these, pm me.

$3 bucks at the Salvation army . . .
4 fully adjustable legs to take 20" motors.
You can safely wheel them around the garage
