View Full Version : Power loss at WOT

What would make a carb'd 2.4 suddenly lost power, or even totally die at WOT, then start up and run normal for awhile.
I've just been through the fuel system, except carb overhaul.
There is enough fuel in the tank, and no water.
Could the "advance" module, which is still connected, go goofy at 5700 rpm, then be OK.
I thought I had this whipped once when I replaced the fuel filter. Just before it came back, I had spun the engine for 2 passes of compression testing with the fuel line disconnected. It loaded up with oil and started hard and real smoky. It seemed to clear out, though. Could I be getting a snot buildup in the oil system?

If I were you I would eliminate the spark advance module as a start , its very unreliable.(It advances the timing at around 5600 rpms )
It seems be a fuel related problem I would have a look at the fuel pump ,
a fuel pressure gauge would also help a lot.
Just incase also check the fuse which is located on top of the switch boxes and check if its loose/corroded ,as once I had the same problem once i go WOt the engine would die it was just a loose fuse:eek:
good luck

Maybe that's why merc doesn't sell the part anymore.
I woke up to a little snow on the boat this morning. If it warms up a little, I'll hook up a pressure gauge after the filter and go for a ride.
Compression is 145 - 150. I run 92 octane fuel. Where should I set the timing?

I have mine set at 24 degrees with 145s of compression running 92 octane

My owner's manual says it retards it, my service manual says it advances it. It really don't make any difference, I chit canned it.
